Pathophysiology of respiratory distress syndrome
Abstract: Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is a major cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity, especially in preterm infants. Its aetiology includes developmental immaturity of the lungs, particularly of the surfactant synthesizing system. Surfactant is produced, stored and recycled by type II pneumocytes and is detectable from about 24 weeks' gestation. It is a mixture of phospholipids, neutral lipids and proteins and is spread as a film over the alveolar surface to lower surface tension and to prevent alveolar collapse. The resulting clinical correlates of RDS can be predicted from the immature lung structure and atelectasis which occur due to surfactant deficiency. Various clinical factors are known to dysregulate surfactant production and function, leading to the development of RDS. Apart from preventing the incidence of prematurity, antenatal steroids and prophylactic surfactant are of proven benefit in reducing the incidence of RDS.

Fungi Linked To Asthma Epidemic In Puerto Rico
A survey of airborne fungi and fungal spores found in Eastern Puerto Rico suggests that certain species may be a major cause of the high incidence of childhood asthma in this part of the world. A report published in a forthcoming issue of the International Journal of Environmental Technology and Management, suggests this information could be used to alleviate human factors that lead to high levels of such fungi.

Stress Affects How Wounds Heal In Different Tissues
Stress is a factor in the healing of wounds, whether they be in skin or mucosal tissue, but stress affects healing in these tissues differently, according to new research conducted at the University of Illinois at Chicago. 'We believe what may improve healing in one tissue type may possibly worsen healing in a different type of tissue,' says Christopher Engeland, assistant professor of periodontics at UIC.

Study shows potential for resolving type 2 diabetes with bariatric surgery
(Elsevier Health Sciences) The primary risk factor for type 2 diabetes is obesity. Medical research indicates that surgery to reduce obesity can completely eliminate all manifestations of diabetes. In a study published in the March 2009 issue of the American Journal of Medicine, investigators analyzed 621 studies from 1990 to April of 2006, which showed that 78.1 percent of diabetic patients had complete resolution and diabetes was improved or resolved in 86.6 percent of patients as the result of bariatric surgery.

The Obesity Beverage - High Fructose Corn Syrup
One day the bird brains in charge of the food supply and public health will wake up – maybe. In the mean time, avoid high fructose corn syrup like the plague. A new study shows that if you are overweight and you consume this at a meal, your metabolic profile is significantly worsened. This means that if an overweight person consumes high fructose corn syrup they are locking in leptin resistance, poor metabolism, and directly increasing risk factors for heart disease and diabetes.I have been saying for a long time that high fructose corn syrup should be banned from the food supply – here is more proof. It would be the first step in combating obesity from a public health point of view. The corn refiners lobby is more important than the health of Americans – another example of Capital Hill for sale.

Drugs That Act On `Fasting Signal` May Curb Insulin Resistance In Obese
A molecular switch found in the fat tissue of obese mice is a critical factor in the development of insulin resistance, report scientists. Previously found to increase glucose production by the liver during fasting, the culprit -- a protein known as CREB -- is also activated in fat tissue of obese mice where it promotes insulin resistance.
