Molecule provides clues about how HPV may lead to cancer
New research shows for the first time that certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV), which cause cervical and some other types of cancer, can inhibit the production of a tiny single-stranded RNA called microRNA 34a, or miR-34a.

Molecule Provides Clues about How Infection with Human Papillomavirus May Lead to Cancer
New research shows for the first time that certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV), which cause cervical and some other types of cancer, can inhibit the production of a tiny single-stranded RNA called microRNA 34a, or miR-34a. The study, appearing online March 3, 2009, and in the April print edition of the journal RNA, was led by researchers at the National cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health.

Salmonella Outbreak In Nebraska Source Identified
The number of salmonella cases in eastern Nebraska initially detected last week has increased, according to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. So far, there are approximately 14 lab-confirmed cases, with 4 considered probable ones and an additional 8 to 10 suspect cases indentified on the basis of reported symptoms. The outbreak preliminarily has been linked to a source-alfalfa sprouts from a local grower, CW Sprouts from Omaha.

TB Breakthrough Could Lead To Stronger Vaccine
A breakthrough strategy to improve the effectiveness of the only tuberculosis vaccine approved for humans provided superior protection against the deadly disease in a pre-clinical test, report scientists at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in Nature Medicine's Advance Online Publication March 1. Their findings resulted from more than 6 years of research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Matrilocal Residence Is Ancestral In Austronesian Societies
Human social behaviour does not fossilise, so we know little about marriage and families in prehistory. We used a 'virtual archaeology' technique to reconstruct the residence rules reflecting how men and women move between communities when they marry. Borrowing phylogenetic methods from evolutionary biology, we traced the language relationships of 135 Pacific societies and tracked the evolution of 5000-year-old residence rules.

Evolutionary Rate Variation In Old World Monkey Genomes
How fast genomes of different species accumulate nucleotide changes, or 'evolutionary rates', is of great interest to many fields of evolutionary biology. Here we have analyzed evolutionary rates of several Old World monkeys, a group of monkeys closely related to humans and apes.

Life Expectancy: The Long And The Short Of It
A new study has revealed that life expectancy can be predicted from the length of specialised bits of DNA at the ends of chromosomes. Researchers studying Alpine swifts have been able to predict the life span of the birds in the wild by measuring their telomeres - specialised bits of DNA that mark the ends of the chromosome in cells of all higher animals including humans and protect the DNA from loss of important genetic information during cell life.

Human Kin Recognition Is Self- Rather Than Family-Referential
We feel more altruistic toward people who resemble us; this tendency probably evolved because it stimulated our ancestors to help their kin. There were no mirrors then, so people could learn what kin looked like only by inspecting the faces of household members; these, however, may or may not be family. Hence, evolution might have favored a rewritable kin-image, where information about household members is replaced by any newly available information about the self.
