LETTER: Shameful support
Regarding the March 14 article 'Burr, Hagan join on tobacco': It is unconscionable that our senators and representatives believe they should continue to support the tobacco industry. The death toll alone is appalling. More than 20,000 North Carolinians die each year from tobacco-related diseases! . . .It is shameful that modern politicians like Sens. Richard Burr and Kay Hagan and Rep. Bob Etheridge grovel for the contributions of the tobacco interests instead of making an effort to convert our agriculture into producing more sustainable and healthful products. . . .We all have family among the 47,000 tobacco industry workers, and we are concerned about their livelihood. But to say that modern North Carolina cannot put them to better use in other types of agriculture or other industries is ridiculous and a cop out.We do need change, and it should start right here in North Carolina on this issue.

LETTER: Toeing tobacco line
Regarding the March 14 article 'N.C. senators offer alternative to FDA regulation of tobacco,' it seems that Sens. Richard Burr and Kay Hagan are catering to the special interests of the tobacco lobby and their own efforts to get re-elected.Although tobacco farming may be more profitable for North Carolinian farmers, it surely is not in the best interests of our nation's children and their health. Shouldn't our senators be looking for ways to lower health care costs? I would urge our senators to drop their bill and support the Waxman-Platts Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) tracks product-related injuries through its National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS).
