A report in the March 23 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine (a journal from JAMA/Archives) indicates that in the United States from 1994 to 2004, the average blood levels of vitamin D seem to have decreased. In the past, the most important health conditions linked to vitamin D deficiency were poor bone mineral content in adults and rickets in children. The report indicates those problems were treated by fortifying food with vitamin D.

Colorado`s Cigarette Smoking Drops Significantly Over A Decade
According to a report released today by the Centers for disease Control and Prevention, Colorado's cigarette smoking rate has significantly declined from 1998 through 2007. The CDC analyzed data from the 2007 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey and found that smoking prevalence decreased in 44 states including Colorado - which decreased from 22.8 percent in 1998 to 18.7 percent in 2007.

Number Of Premature Births In Maryland Drops 4%, USA
There is good news for babies born in Maryland, says the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH). The number of babies born prematurely (before 37 weeks of pregnancy) dropped by over 4 percent from 2006 to 2007 according to the Center for disease Control's National Center for Health Statistics. Premature births were down in all racial and ethnic groups in the state.
