EDITORIAL: Go postal on buttleggers: Congress must shut down mail-order cigarette tax cheats
Native Americans are permitted to purchase untaxed cigarettes for their own consumption and for sale to other Indians. But reservations, including some on Long Island and upstate, have become major distribution points for general buyers across New York and the U.S. . . . One way to significantly cut trafficking would be to bar the Postal Service and common carriers from shipping cigarettes, just as they are prohibited from delivering handguns. The House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday approved such a measure. Enactment of the bill, sponsored by Rep. Anthony Weiner, would be a big step in the right direction. As we said, snuff away.
