Dying At Home: A Trend That Could Make Hospitals More Efficient
It's a common tale: a grandparent's health begins to fail and, realistically, their death is imminent. Often those older patients are rushed to hospital, taken out of their homes for treatment that will likely only extend their life by a few days. University of Alberta researcher Donna Wilson is hoping this can change and already has seen some drastic changes in where Canadians are choosing to die.

National Institutes of Health Hosts Career Symposium for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Trainees
The National Institutes of Health, hosted its second career symposium on May 19, 2009 in the Natcher Conference Center. The event, organized by the Office of Intramural Training & Education (OITE), for graduate students and postdoctoral trainees included presentations from more than 80 speakers about a variety of careers for scientists. More than 1,000 participants were registered to attend, including guests from many local universities. The NIH Career Symposium provides an opportunity for young scientists to learn about the career opportunities available to them and to explore factors that lead to career success.

An international scientific study involving researchers from the University of Glasgow has identified eight common genetic differences which may increase the risk of high blood pressure. The University researchers, led by Professor Anna Dominiczak and Professor John Connell, contributed to the global study of genes in high blood pressure through participation in the Medical Research Council's British Genetics of Hypertension study.

High Blood Pressure May Be Programmed In The Womb
A scientific study has found further evidence that high blood pressure in adulthood is pre-programmed in the womb. Researchers from the Universities of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Southampton who carried out tests of 278 elderly people found those with high levels of aldosterone in their blood - a hormone which increases blood pressure - also had a low birth weight.

More Intensive Glucose Control In Type 2 Diabetes Reduces Heart Attacks And Heart Disease Events
A meta-analysis of five trials has shown that more intensive glucose control in type 2 diabetes leads to fewer heart attacks and heart disease events - but has no significant effect on stroke or mortality from all causes. The findings are reported in an Article in this week's diabetes special issue of The Lancet, written by Dr Kausik Ray, University of Cambridge, UK, and colleagues.
