Reality Check: The Inevitable Disappointments from Stem Cells
Happy days are here again for the embryonic stem cell (ESC) research community, or at least they should be. The day after Barack Obama was inaugurated as president in January, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration green-lighted an application from Geron Corporation to pursue the first phase I clinical trial of an ESC-based therapy (in this case, for spinal cord injury).President Obama, who ran on a pro-ESC research platform, cannot take credit for that regulatory first, which was largely a coincidence of timing. But he has already made good on his promise to lift the burdensome restrictions on federally funded ESC studies imposed by his predecessor in 2001. Laboratories receiving federal money are once again free to work on the cell lines of their choice (with some important restrictions). [More]

Excess Appetite Causes Abdominal Fat
Researchers have discovered that your stomach’s appetite signal, ghrelin, can also turn on gene signals that result in accumulation of stomach fat. The study means that rather than doing crunches to flatten your stomach spend more time getting your appetite under control and your stomach is likely to shrink. Ghrelin is required for normal health and a normal appetite. It is a hormone signal that is released in your stomach, in turn signaling your brain. It also signals the activation of growth hormone in your body, which is vital for overall rejuvenation and anti-aging. In other words, a normal appetite is required for good health. On the other hand, once leptin resistance sets in and excess weight is gained ghrelin signaling becomes compromised. It becomes excessive and loses it proper timing and rhythm. This leads to a routinely excess appetite signal, making you eat too much food. The new research shows that ghrelin also signals the fat c

Congress to give FDA new authority over tobacco products: For the first time, smokers may be able to see what`s in the products they consume. Harmful additives could be limited, but critics say making cigarettes safer will make many less inclined t
In a historic shift in public health policy, Congress is poised to give the federal government sweeping new authority to regulate the manufacturing of cigarettes and other tobacco products. The legislation, long resisted by the tobacco industry, could allow consumers to see for the first time what chemicals and other additives tobacco companies put in their products. It would empower the Food and Drug Administration to put new limits on harmful ingredients and prohibit tobacco companies from marketing 'light' cigarettes. And it would give the FDA new authority to enlarge warning labels and severely restrict full-color advertising for cigarettes and other tobacco products. Yet the victory, which eluded anti-tobacco advocates for decades, comes with challenges as well as promise, as federal officials are given never-before-used tools to control a product that is still linked to some 400,000 deaths every year in the United States. Particularly tricky may be keeping up the momentum of
