The Evolution of House Cats
It is by turns aloof and affectionate, serene and savage, endearing and exasperating. Despite its mercurial nature, however, the house cat is the most popular pet in the world. A third of American households have feline members, and more than 600 million cats live among humans worldwide. Yet as familiar as these creatures are, a complete understanding of their origins has proved elusive. Whereas other once wild animals were domesticated for their milk, meat, wool or servile labor, cats contribute virtually nothing in the way of sustenance or work to human endeavor. How, then, did they become commonplace fixtures in our homes?Scholars long believed that the ancient Egyptians were the first to keep cats as pets, starting around 3,600 years ago. But genetic and archaeological discoveries made over the past five years have revised this scenario--and have generated fresh insights into both the ancestry of the house cat and how its relationship with humans evolved. Statement of Senator Edward M. Kennedy on the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act on the vote to Invoke Cloture
This long-overdue grant of authority to FDA to regulate tobacco products means that the agency can finally take the actions needed to protect our people from the most deadly of all consumer products. Passage of this legislation is much more than a victory for those who have championed this cause for so long. It is a life-saving act for the millions of Americans, especially the young, who will be spared a lifetime of addiction and premature death. . . . The FDA conducted the longest rulemaking proceeding in its history, studying which regulations would most effectively reduce the number of children who smoke. Seven hundred thousand public comments were received in the course of that rulemaking. At the conclusion of its proceeding, the Agency promulgated rules on the manner in which cigarettes are advertised and sold. Due to litigation, most of those regulations were never implemented. If we are serious about curbing youth smoking as much as possible, as soon as possi

EDITORIAL: Can this man save thousands of lives?
Imagine the worldwide alarm if over a year's time 443,000 of the metropolitan Boise population of 587,000 died. Such a massive death toll of 75 percent of the city's people would be twice the 220,000 killed by atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Yet, without much statistical change from year to year and with scant public outcry, more than 400,000 Americans died each year between 2000 and 2004 from tobacco use, inflicting a stunning $97 billion in lost human productivity and $96 billion in health care costs. Help is on the way, however. President Obama has picked Dr. Thomas Frieden, new york City's health commissioner, to take over the main federal public health agency, the Centers for disease Control and Prevention. The physician-trained Frieden is the right person at the right moment. His record in New York City was awesome. He pushed through smoking bans in restaurants. The city now claims it has 300,000 fewer smokers as a result. . . . Timing is everything. With Dr
