Metabolism of a Glycosaminoglycan during Metamorphosis in the Japanese Conger eel, Conger myriaster
Hyaluronan (HA) is a linear polysaccharide of high molecular weight that exists as a component of the extracellular matrix. The larvae (leptocephali) of the Japanese conger eel (Anguilliformes: Conger myriaster) have high levels of hyaluronan (HA) which is thought to help control body water content. We isolated glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) from Japanese conger eel leptocephali and measured the changes in tissue HA content during metamorphosis. HA content decreased during metamorphosis. In contrast, neutral sugar content increased during metamorphosis. We hypothesize that the leptocephali utilize a metabolic pathway that converts HA to glucose during metamorphosis. Glucose may then be metabolized to glycogen and stored in the juvenile life-history stage. (Source: Research Letters in Biochemist...

Urinary Marker Predicts Complications in Type 1 Diabetes (CME/CE)
Increased urinary excretion of the protein IgM in patients with type 1 diabetes was associated with an elevated risk for cardiovascular mortality and end-stage renal disease and may represent a prognostic marker for these complications, a new study found.

Race/Ethnicity Related Differences in Blood Cadmium Levels in US Women of Childbearing Age
Purpose: To characterize potential variation in blood cadmium (Cd) levels by race/ethnicity in reproductive aged women. Cd is long-lived in the body. Due to increased dietary absorption of Cd in menstruating women, reproductive age-exposures may be important determinants of body burden. Low-level exposure, even among non-smokers, has been associated with renal impairment, osteoporosis and cancer. What Differs on the Enzymatic Acetylation Mechanisms for Arylamines and Arylhydrazines Substrates? A Theoretical Study
The acetylation mechanisms of several selected typical substrates from experiments, including arylamines and arylhydrazines, are investigated with the density functional theory in this paper. The results indicate that all the transition states are characterized by a four-membered ring structure, and hydralazine (HDZ) is the most potent substrate. The bioactivity for all the compounds is increased in a sequence of PABA≈4-AS<4-MA<5-AS≈INH<HDZ. The conjunction effect and the delocalization of the lone pairs of N atom play a key role in the reaction. All the results are consistent with the experimental data. Selection For Pathogen-Resistance And Increased Risk For Inflammatory Disease Linked By Study
New research reveals that a simple laboratory assay detects a genetic variation in host response to bacterial infection that is associated with an increased susceptibility for inflammatory disease. The study, published by Cell Press online on August 6th in the American Journal of Human Genetics, also provides fascinating insight into the link between evolution and the ability to ward off pathogens.

Parental Education Boosts Achievement In Kids
With school days just around the corner, a University of Michigan researcher has some advice for parents who want to increase their children's academic success. 'If you want your kids to do well in school, then the amount of education you get yourself is important,' said Pamela Davis-Kean, a psychologist at the U-M Institute for Social Research (ISR). 'This may mean that parents need to go back to school.
