[Bone densitometry in inflammatory rheumatic diseases : Characteristics of the measurement site and disease-specific factors.]
Authors: Franck H, , Braun J, Buttgereit F, Demary W, Hein G, Kekow J, Schett G, Kern PM Bone densitometry should be performed earlier in patients with inflammatory arthritis, since factors such as inflammation and drug therapy, in particular treatment with glucocorticoids, have an important impact on the development of osteoporosis. DXA (Dual energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is considered the gold standard for bone densitometry. According to the German guidelines for osteoporosis, bone densitometry plays a crucial role in the choice of therapy. In patients with rheumatoid arthritis, measurement of peripheral bone (forearm) density in addition to lumbar spine and hip is recommended, since local bone loss is pathognomonic for this disease. DXA measurements of the hand enable the diagnosis of...

The value of calcaneal bone mass measurement using a dual X-ray laser calscan device in risk screening for osteoporosis
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate how bone mineral density in the calcaneus measured by a dual energy X-ray laser (DXL) correlates with bone mineral density in the spine and hip in Turkish women over 40 years of age and to determine whether calcaneal dual energy X-ray laser variables are associated with clinical risk factors to the same extent as axial bone mineral density measurements obtained using dual energy x-ray absorbtiometry (DXA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 2,884 Turkish women, aged 40-90 years, living in Ankara were randomly selected. Calcaneal bone mineral density was evaluated using a dual energy X-ray laser Calscan device. Subjects exhibiting a calcaneal dual energy X-ray laser T- score

Discovery Of `Fatostatin` A Turnoff For Fat Genes
A small molecule earlier found to have both anti-fat and anti-cancer abilities works as a literal turnoff for fat-making genes, according to a new report in the August 28th issue of the journal Chemistry and Biology, a Cell Press journal. The chemical blocks a well known master controller of fat synthesis, a transcription factor known as SREBP. That action in mice that are genetically prone to obesity causes the animals to become leaner.

Delivery Of Cancer-Fighting Molecules Improved By U-Iowa
Small interfering RNA (siRNA), a type of genetic material, can block potentially harmful activity in cells, such as tumor cell growth. But delivering siRNA successfully to specific cells without adversely affecting other cells has been challenging. University of Iowa researchers have modified siRNA so that it can be injected into the bloodstream and impact targeted cells while producing fewer side effects.

Renal impairment in a rural African antiretroviral programme
Background: There is little knowledge regarding the prevalence and nature of renal impairment in African populations initiating antiretroviral treatment, nor evidence to inform the best methods of screening for renal impairment. With the increasing availability of the potentially nephrotoxic drug tenofovir, such information is important for the planning of antiretroviral programmes. Methods: (i) Retrospective review of the prevalence and risk factors for impaired renal function in 2189 individuals initiating antiretroviral treatment in a rural African setting between 2004 and 2007 (ii) A prospective study of 149 consecutive patients initiating antiretrovirals to assess the utility of simple urine analysis for the detection of impaired renal function. Estimates of renal function were calculated with abbreviated Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (4 variable MDRD) equation without correction for ethnicity. Severe renal and moderately impaired renal function were defined as an estimate

60-Year-Old Drug Shows New Promise For Inherited Cancer
Cancer Research UK-funded scientists have shown that an early chemotherapy drug invented in the 1940s has the potential to work against a genetic fault called HNPCC* which is linked to bowel and other cancers. The results are published in EMBO Molecular Medicine** today, (Thursday). HNPCC is a hereditary condition involved in around five per cent of all bowel cancer cases.
