Evidence-based assessment of antiosteoporotic activity of petroleum-ether extract of Cissus quadrangularis Linn. on ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis. Authors: Potu BK, Rao MS, Nampurath GK, Chamallamudi MR, Prasad K, Nayak SR, Dharmavarapu PK, Kedage V, Bhat KM The increasing incidence of postmenopausal osteoporosis and its related fractures have become global health issues in the recent days. Postmenopausal osteoporosis is the most frequent metabolic bone disease; it is characterized by a rapid loss of mineralized bone tissue. Hormone replacement therapy has proven efficacious in preventing bone loss but not desirable to many women due to its side-effects. Therefore we are in need to search the natural compounds for a treatment of postmenopausal symptoms in women with no toxic effects. In the present study, we have evaluated the effect of petroleum-ether extract of Cissus quadrangularis Linn. (CQ), a plant used in folk medicine, on... Medical News TodayHostility and Fasting Glucose in African American Women Objective: To examine whether the relationship of hostility (HOST) to fasting glucose indices is moderated by sex and race. HOST has been associated with abnormalities in glucose metabolism. Prior studies suggested that this association may be more prevalent in women and in African American (AA) individuals. Methods: A total of 565 healthy AA and white (W) men and women (mean age = 33 ± 6 years) were assessed. HOST was measured by the 27-item version of the Cook Medley HOST Scale. The moderating effects of sex and race were evaluated for the associations of HOST to fasting glucose, insulin, and insulin sensitivity (HOMA-IR). Results: Analysis showed a moderating effect of sex and race on the association of HOST to fasting glucose (p = .03), but not for insulin (p = .12). Analysis of HOMA-IR revealed a trend (p = .06) for the interaction. Stratified analyses by race and sex revealed a positive association between HOST and fasting glucose only in AA women, which remained signi WiredHostility and Change in Cognitive Function Over Time in Older Blacks and Whites Objective: To test whether the level of hostility predicted the rate of cognitive decline in a community of older blacks and whites and whether the association varied as a function of race. Methods: Over 4800 persons from a defined community in Chicago completed up to three structured interviews at approximately 3 year intervals over a period of up to 8.8 years (mean = 4.4 years). At the baseline interview, hostility was assessed with 8-items from the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale. Cognitive function was assessed at each interview with four cognitive function tests from which a composite measure of cognition was formed. Mixed effects models were used to assess change in cognition and its relation to hostility, controlling for age, sex, education, and race. Results: The average score on the hostility scale at baseline was 3.0 (SD = 2.1). Higher levels of hostility were associated with lower cognitive scores (estimate = –0.028, SE = 0.004, p < .001). Cognition declined at a rate WiredMU Researchers Better Understand The Brain Circuit That Controls Binge Eating Scientists led a rat to the fatty food, but they couldn't make it eat. Using an animal model of binge eating, University of Missouri researchers discovered that deactivating the basolateral amygdala, a brain region involved in regulating emotion, specifically blocked consumption of a fatty diet. Surprisingly, it had no effect on the rat wanting to look for the food repeatedly. Medical News Today1 2 |
