Letter to Industry on Cigarettes Containing Certain Characterizing Flavors
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is providing this notice to remind regulated industry that effective September 22, 2009, cigarettes that contain certain characterizing flavors are considered adulterated under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA or the Act), as amended by the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (FSPTCA). Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. An important way to reduce the death and disease caused by smoking is to prevent children and adolescents from starting to smoke. Congress has stated that flavors make cigarettes more appealing to youth and often result in exposure to additional carcinogens and other toxic constituents. The removal from the market of cigarettes that contain certain characterizing flavors is an important step in FDA's efforts to reduce the burden of illness and death caused by tobacco products.

Letter - Regulating Tobacco
Your editorial and its headline did not acknowledge the different actions taken by the nation's leading tobacco companies with regard to regulation of tobacco products by the Food and Drug Administration. Altria Group, parent company of Philip Morris USA, the nation's largest cigarette manufacturer, and U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company, the largest smokeless tobacco manufacturer, supported the enactment of legislation granting the F.D.A. such authority for more than eight years. Further, while we have repeatedly voiced concerns about the constitutionality of certain provisions in the bill, none of our companies are party to the lawsuit filed by other tobacco companies. We are currently monitoring the litigation and seeking ways to work constructively with the F.D.A. in resolving those concerns. We feel that it is a disservice that you did not mention that two of the largest tobacco operating companies in the United States are not a part of the 'Big Tobacco' action about which you wrot

The team's conclusions, published today in two separate articles in the journal PLoS Medicine, recommend that the World Health Organization (WHO) must review and adjust its guidelines for fighting the disease.

Questions remain in H1N1 vaccine distribution
Pregnant women and children 6 months to 4 years old top the list. Distribution specifics are in flux. As the United States gears up for one of the largest vaccination programs ever conducted, the broad outlines of the campaign to vaccinate nearly 100 million Americans against pandemic H1N1 influenza virus by Christmas are beginning to fall into place.
