Diabetes UK is calling on people to help bring diabetes to light on World Diabetes Day (Saturday 14 November). Diabetes UK, along with six other diabetes charities in the UK, is taking part in the World Diabetes Day Monument Challenge and we are asking people to join in by lighting local landmarks and buildings in blue on or around Saturday 14 November.

People With Diabetes Still Missing Out On Sight-Saving Screening, UK
Diabetes UK warns that almost a quarter of people with diabetes in England are at increased risk of losing their sight because they have not been screened using a digital camera to spot signs of retinopathy, the leading cause of blindness in the UK's working-age population. The latest Department of Health figures show that 24.5 per cent of people with diabetes aged 12 and over did not receive retinal screening in the period July 2008 to June 2009.

Racial disparities in diabetes prevalence linked to living conditions
(Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health) The higher incidence of diabetes among African Americans when compared to whites may have more to do with living conditions than genetics, according to a study led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The study found that when African Americans and whites live in similar environments and have similar incomes, their diabetes rates are similar, which contrasts with the fact that nationally diabetes is more prevalent among African-Americans than whites.

1 million euro EU grant for MDC diabetes researcher Dr. Francesca M. Spagnoli
(Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres) A European Research Grant worth more than a million euros over the next five years has been awarded to Dr. Francesca M. Spagnoli of the Max Delbrück Center, Germany. For nearly a year Dr. Spagnoli has been leading a Helmholtz junior research group at MDC, an institution of the Helmholtz Association, and at Charité -- Universitätsmedizin Berlin. She belongs to the 240 top scientists the ERC has chosen from more than 2,500 applicants.
