Alberta Medical Association Presents Its 2009 Medal of Honor to the Family of Walter Doll
CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Sept. 24, 2009) - The Alberta Medical Association (AMA) will award its 2009 Medal of Honor to Walter Doll for his commitment to improving the quality of health care for Albertans. Mr. Doll, a long-time champion for health care for the citizens of Fairview, Alberta, passed away on July 9, 2009, at the age of 74. The award, which will be presented posthumously during the AMA's annual Representative Forum, September 25, in Calgary, is awarded to a non-physician who has made outstanding personal contributions to the people in Alberta and who has contributed to the advancement of medical research, medical education, health care organization, health education and/or health promotion to the public. Mr. Doll is one of only two Medal of Honor recipients for 2009. Mr. Doll's family will accept the award.

A phase III efficacy trial organized by the U.S. Military HIV Research Program and the Thai Ministry of Public Health, involving 16,000 volunteers in Thailand has revealed that volunteers who received a prime-boost combination of two AIDS vaccine candidates - ALVAC combined with AIDSVAX - had infection rates 31.2% lower than people who received a placebo.

Smoking Ban Could Reduce The Risk Of Heart Disease Claim New Studies
Two new studies have found that the number of heart attacks has fallen by up to a third in countries where bans on smoking in public places have been introduced. Smoking in pubs, restaurants and other public spaces was banned in England and Wales in July 2007, a year after similar laws were introduced in Scotland. The Scottish ban led to a 14 per cent fall in the number of people being admitted to hospital with a heart attack the following year.
