The Pesticide Residues Committee (PRC) published findings from the Department of Health's School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme for Spring 2009. The second report for the school year 2008/9 found that the fruit and vegetables supplied to schools met legal standards with regard to pesticide residues levels and that the presence of residues would be unlikely to have any effect on those who ate the food.

Ferryl hemoglobins, either with or without a radical site on the protein moiety, are oxidizing species. Plant polyphenols, flavonoids, have been shown to act as antioxidants in vivo and in vitro. Reactions of met- and oxyhemoglobin with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of catechin, quercetin and rutin were studied. These flavonoids accelerated reduction of ferryl hemoglobin to methemoglobin. The rate constants of the reactions of ferryl hemoglobin with catechin, quercetin and rutin were in the order of 10(2) M(-1) s(-1), i.e. similar to the rate constants of ferryl hemoglobin with intracellular reducing compounds like urate or ascorbate. As a new ban on most flavored cigarettes went into effect, officials with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned manufacturers against trying to get around the law by marketing copycat products, such as mini flavored cigars.

In Yelm, police said they haven't seen a problem with flavored cigarettes. Yelm police and school resource officer Bill DeVore said he's seen a decrease in the number of children smoking this year. 'I haven't seen anyone with flavored cigarettes,' he said. When DeVore confiscates cigarettes, he said they tend to be standard, non-flavored brands.
