Neither power, lust nor stupidity are good motives.' -- Ayn Rand, 'Textbook of Americanism,' 1946 Just when you thought it was safe to take a break and spark up a 'Bayou Blast' smoke, better think again: 'The new federal ban on flavored cigarettes took effect on Tuesday, marking one of the first visible signs of the Food and Drug Administration's new authority to regulate tobacco.' (Associated Press, Sept. 22) And the justification for this intrusion into your non-aggressive activities? 'Candy- and fruit-flavored cigarettes are a gateway for many children and young adults to become regular tobacco users,' said Dr. Lawrence R. Deyton, director of the FDA's Center for Tobacco Products. Yep, the children are being threatened! . . . Who gave the 'officials' of the FDA the moral right to regulate the non-coercive activities of a (supposedly) free population? . . . It almost seems so. The ties that bind these oral temptations were in the news again this month when the Food and Drug Administration banned the sale of flavored cigarettes. It was the agency's first big move since Congress authorized it, within limits, to regulate tobacco products. Many are not even aware that they make cigarettes with strawberry, chocolate or other flavoring. At one point, R.J. Reynolds put out Twista Lime, Kauai Kolada and Warm Winter Toffee as part of its Camel Exotic Blends. Yuck. But some younger people think these things are great. "These flavored cigarettes are a gateway for many children and young adults to become regular smokers," FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said. . . . Another example of mixing tobacco and sugar was brought to our attention by Oregon's junior senator, Jeff Merkley. When he was visiting several weeks ago, he pulled out a tin of candies, each containing a small amount o Tobacco.orgJACKSON: Let's ban all flavors of cigarettes IT WAS a good first step by the Food and Drug Administration to ban candy- and fruit-flavored cigarettes this week under its new powers to regulate tobacco. The next and much bigger step is ending Menthol Madness. . . . Medical journal studies over the last four years have found that smokers of menthol cigarettes are significantly more likely to have difficulty quitting smoking and that tobacco companies have deliberately manipulated menthol levels (as they did with nicotine) to lure younger smokers with 'milder'' taste. While menthol cigarettes are nearly 30 percent of the overall US market, 44 percent of smokers ages 12 to 17 reported smoking menthol brands. The menthol exemption also leaves dangling in political midair explosive charges of racism. . . . But with at least a year to go before possible banning, Big Tobacco is systematically hooking as many new smokers as possible. Medical News TodayDo High Fat Diets Make a Person Tired and Dumb? A new study by Oxford researchers has shown one way that a high fat diet challenges your body’s health, leading to a decline in energy and mental function within nine days. Even a short-term high fat diet (55% of calories as fat – typical junk food diet) can reduce energetic capacity and endurance, while at the same time impairing mental capability. Not exactly a competitive advantage in sports or in the office. A specific mechanism was identified – an increase in uncoupling proteins. This means that instead of using calories to produce energy, normal metabolism was uncoupled by the high fat diet so that the extra calories could be disposed of as heat. This is a defense mechanism against being poisoned by too much food. The trade off, in order to perform this defensive action, is that normal energy production is sacrificed. This resulted in a 50% drop in endurance by the 9th day (animal study). Since the energy currency of your body (ATP) i Wellness Resource1 2 |
