EDITORIAL: Flavored cigarette ban a bit hazy
What's happening in the world of Big Tobacco is particularly relevant to the debate over health care. We've known for decades that smoking is dangerous to our health, but despite stories about people who lose their vocal cords and worse to cancer, onerous sin taxes, public expressions of disgust and laws that forbid smoking just about everywhere (including, in one ironic instance, cigar shops), 3,600 children and teens start smoking every day; 1,100 develop the nicotine habit. Many of these new smokers are attracted to tobacco by flavored cigarettes . . . Through the years, Big Tobacco has, depending on your view, either displayed huge measures of ingenuity and marketing skills (Joe Camel comes to mind) or it's been crassly cynical in search of a waning market (flavored cigarettes being their latest trick to lure new smokers). But what about personal responsibility (remember that concept?) and self-control when temptation tugs at our appetites? Is a ban of chocolate cake (mercy!)

EDITORIAL: Big Tobacco atttempts to evade FDA rules
Locally, the Kingsport/Bristol region is the second smokiest region in the United States, with approximately 30.5 percent of all adults smoking. That statistic takes a terrible toll on our health, and strains our hospitals where administrators say the majority of admissions are related to smoking. Reducing smoking reduces the associated health costs for these illnesses. Yes, tobacco is still a legal product. But as of last week, it is an FDA-regulated one because of its proven harm to human health. Curtailing some marketing of a proven cancer-causing product should not become a free-speech call to arms. It is a matter of protecting the public's health.

Exclusion of menthol cigarettes in ban worries health experts
The act required the FDA to create a Tobacco Products Advisory Committee, which will submit reports on such questions as 'the impact of the use of menthol in cigarettes on the public health.' Although teen smoking overall has declined, the proportion who smoke menthol cigarettes is rising -- 17.5% from 2000 to 2002, according to the American Legacy Foundation, created as a result of the 1998 settlement between state attorneys general and the tobacco industry. About 44% of smokers ages 12 to 17 use menthol cigarettes, the foundation says. 'It makes no sense' to keep menthol cigarettes on the market, says Legacy CEO Cheryl Healton. A 2002 study found 60% of middle school smokers smoked menthol, says scientist James Hersey with RTI International, an independent research institute in Washington, D.C. 'I think menthol is easier to smoke, so kids will often start with menthol.'
