Reducing smoking reduces the associated health costs for these illnesses. Yes, tobacco is still a legal product. Join TogetherMore tax money going up in smoke Specialty tobacco retailers in Hawai'i are bracing for the ignition of a new state law on Wednesday that dramatically increases taxes on cigars, pipe tobacco and smokeless tobacco. The tax hike, passed by the Legislature in May, will result in state taxes accounting for half or more than half the wholesale price of such tobacco products, with consumers paying for the hike in retail purchases. The move comes on the heals of a federal tobacco tax increase that took effect in April, and was intended to increase revenue to the state in an effort to help balance its budget. But the higher taxes are also expected to hurt sales for retailers already suffering in the bad economy by curbing smoking for some consumers or leading them to buy tobacco elsewhere. 'It's going to kill us,' said Diane Chow, manager of Kipuka Smoke Shop in Hilo. Tobacco.orgExclusion of menthol cigarettes in ban worries health experts The act required the FDA to create a Tobacco Products Advisory Committee, which will submit reports on such questions as 'the impact of the use of menthol in cigarettes on the public health.' Although teen smoking overall has declined, the proportion who smoke menthol cigarettes is rising -- 17.5% from 2000 to 2002, according to the American Legacy Foundation, created as a result of the 1998 settlement between state attorneys general and the tobacco industry. About 44% of smokers ages 12 to 17 use menthol cigarettes, the foundation says. 'It makes no sense' to keep menthol cigarettes on the market, says Legacy CEO Cheryl Healton. A 2002 study found 60% of middle school smokers smoked menthol, says scientist James Hersey with RTI International, an independent research institute in Washington, D.C.
