Moms Are Never Off-Duty
I caught up with a new fall sit-com last week called The Middle, starring Patricia Heaton of Everybody Loves Raymond fame. The show has nothing specifically to do with special needs, but a scene in the most recent episode made me laugh with recognition. Heaton's harried mom, torn between responsibilities to kids and work and elderly relatives, is granted fifteen minutes of alone time by a co-worker who promises to cover for her while she relaxes in the employee washroom. The police officer on the scene makes it clear that everything is the mom's fault, because moms don't get to take breaks. It sure does seem that way sometimes

Weekday Reflection: The Journey

These parents' hearts burst with pride as they won the right to put their children on a school bus to the neighborhood school and their hearts broke from outrage when society would limit their children's opportunities because of outdated ideas. Today universities are putting programs in place to attract and graduate people with intellectual disabilities, making a college education a reality for many.' -- Geralyn Spiesz, from the opinion piece 'Doors opening for all with Down syndrome' in the Buffalo News Reflect: What have I done to further the journey of children like mine? What can I do to make society more accepting and more ambitious for my child? Is there one small thing I
