Depression and Anxiety Often Occur Together
Symptoms of depression and anxiety often co-occur in certain disorders. In fact, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, major depression often accompanies panic disorder and other anxiety disorders. While depression and anxiety have distinct clinical features, there is some overlap of symptoms. For example, in both depression and anxiety, irritability, decreased concentration and impaired sleep are common. It seems that some people have depressive symptoms and then begin having symptoms of an anxiety disorder. For others, the anxiety disorder comes first. If you have both depression and an anxiety disorder, it's important to address both illnesses. The good news is that the usual treatments for panic disorder are effective for most people in treating depression.Depression and Anxiety Often Occur Together originally appeared on About.com Panic Disorder on Thursday, July 23rd, 2009 at 22:42:18.Permalink | Comment | Email this

What is an Anxiety Attack?
Many people use the term ?anxiety attack? to describe the main symptoms of panic disorder. Sometimes people also use the term anxiety attack to describe their response to certain real dangers or normal life experiences that make them anxious. The terms anxiety attacks and panic attacks are often used interchangeably to mean the same thing. In this sense, the difference is purely a matter of semantics. But from a clinical perspective, panic and anxiety are defined by different features. In order to understand what someone really means by ?anxiety attack,? it is necessary to consider the context in which the symptoms occur. Centralized Review Process Markedly Expedites Approval of Cancer Clinical Trials
A Central Institutional Review Board (CIRB) for cancer clinical trials that was created by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, in 2001 helps trials start more quickly (just over a month faster, on average) and thus expedite the time from concept to completion of crucial investigational research according to a new finding. This study of the CIRB was performed by scientists at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS) and Stanford University School of Medicine, Palo Alto, Calif., with assistance from NCI and appears online October 19, 2009 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

A Loopy Idea That Works: Using Telecoils to Turn Hearing Aids into Mini Loudspeakers
Whereas standard behind- and in-the-ear hearing aids work well in relatively quiet, more intimate settings, these devices often lose their effectiveness in larger, public spaces where background noise puts the hard of hearing at a disadvantage. Although the technology to solve this problem--induction-loop systems that broadcast sound directly to hearing aids and cochlear implants--has been available for years, implementation has lagged, advocates say, because not enough is being done to promote their use.
