Weekday Reflection: School Violence
Read: 'When we will fail our students it is not a 'mere academic' failure. It has real life consequences for the student and others. Transition plans and staff training are not technical issues to be covered in a proforma way in the last 2 minutes of an IEP meeting. It is time we step back and thoughtfully look at all of this violence and address it with policies that are more reasoned than zero-tolerance.' -- Charles Fox, from the post 'Lack of Appropriate Interventions and Training Lead to Tragic Results' on the Special Education Law Blog. Reflect: Has my child been a victim of violence at school? Has my child been accused of being violent toward others? What needs to be done to keep my child and other children safe? Respond in the comments with your own thoughts on this quote and how it applies to your life with your child. Every weekday, take a moment to read, reflect, and respond to a passage from a book, blog, or article. ... More Reflections Also new today: Site of the Da

Centralized Review Process Markedly Expedites Approval of Cancer Clinical Trials
A Central Institutional Review Board (CIRB) for cancer clinical trials that was created by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, in 2001 helps trials start more quickly (just over a month faster, on average) and thus expedite the time from concept to completion of crucial investigational research according to a new finding. This study of the CIRB was performed by scientists at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS) and Stanford University School of Medicine, Palo Alto, Calif., with assistance from NCI and appears online October 19, 2009 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

UGA researcher says cigarette ban too lax - News
Though sweet-tasting cigarettes with flavors such as vanilla, strawberry or clove are now banned, a University researcher is saying the ban does not go far enough. President Barack Obama signed into law the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act in June, which banned all flavors of cigarettes - except menthol. Jessica Muilenburg, researcher and assistant professor in the University's College of Public Health, recently completed a study of the smoking habits of more than 4,000 middle and high school students. Muilenburg and Jerome Legge, also a University researcher, found menthol smokers consistently smoked a higher amount of tobacco than non-menthol smokers. 'I think the intention [of the legislation] was to keep cigarettes out of the hands of minors,' Muilenburg said in a telephone interview Friday. 'The thinking was that the flavored cigarettes are more likely to be smoked by kids who aren't allowed to smoke.' But Muilenburg said the ban has been ineffective at its go

Advocate calls for menthol cigarette ban
Cheryl G. Healton, head of the American Legacy Foundation, told 150 scientists and public health advocates the success of menthol cigarettes is no accident. Many hundreds of tobacco industry documents conclusively establish that the tobacco industry has for decades systematically developed and marketed menthol products to attract 'starter' and youth smokers, Healton said. . . . 'Congress did ban a wide array of other flavors including strawberry, grape, orange, clove, cinnamon, pineapple, vanilla, coconut, licorice, cocoa, chocolate, cherry and coffee, based on the common sense logic that flavored cigarettes make smoking more attractive to kids,' Healton told the meeting. However, menthol flavors are still permitted, Healton pointed out. Forty-seven percent of Hispanic smokers in high school usually smoke menthol cigarettes, while 76 percent of African-American smokers, 62 percent of Asian-American smokers and 29 percent of white smokers prefer menthol cigarettes.
