Secondhand Smoke a Killer, Institute of Medicine Report Says
The report, requested by the U.S. Centers for disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke, and that people with heart conditions could risk heart attacks with less than an hour's exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, which restricts blood vessels and increases clotting.

The Institute of Medicine, which advises Congress, has announced recommendations to make lunches and breakfasts provided by schools more nutritious. Sixty percent of U.S. schoolchildren participate in the school lunch program. The proposed guidelines include limits on salt, fat and calories.

Hand-Foot Genital Syndrome In Women Without HOXA13 Gene Mutation
Hugh S. Taylor, M.D., professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences at Yale, and colleagues have found that women without mutations of the HOXA13 gene do not need to be subjected to x-rays and other tests for a rare condition called hand-foot genital syndrome. The research is being presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) scientific meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, October 17-21.

A study that appears in this month's Archives of Internal Medicine, shows that people who live in neighborhoods that support physical activity and access to healthy food have a lower risk for type 2 diabetes. The research from Drexel University school of Public Health studied where people live and the implications on their health. According to the researchers of this study, 'The worldwide epidemic of type 2 diabetes mellitus is largely driven by the combined rise in obesity, intake of energy-dense or nutrient-poor foods and physical inactivity.' If where you live is conducive to exercise and healthy food, it seems logical that your risk for diabetes would be lower than someone who lives in an area where it's not safe to walk and difficult to shop for healthy food.
