Effects of Methotrexate on Plasma Cytokines and Cardiac Remodeling and Function in Postmyocarditis Rats
In this study, we used a rat model of cardiac myosin-induced experimental autoimmune myocarditis to investigate the effects of low-dose methotrexate (0.1 mg/kg/d for 30 d) on the plasma level of cytokines and cardiac remodeling and function. Our study showed that levels of tumor necrosis factor-(TNF-)alpha and interleukin-6 (IL-6) are significantly increased in postmyocarditis rats, compared with the control rats. Methotrexate treatment reduced the plasma levels of TNF-alpha and IL-6 and increased IL-10 level, compared to saline treatment. In addition, postmyocarditis rats showed significant cardiac fibrosis characterized by increased myocardial collagen volume fraction, perivascular collagen area, and the ratio of collagen type I to type III, compared with the control rats. ...MedWorm Message: Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm Swine Flu RSS news feed - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.

Xyzal Now Indicated For Children 6 Months to Five Years of Age
Xyzal (levocetirizine), a low-sedating prescription antihistamine available for the treatment of allergic rhinitis and urticaria, has now been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for children as young as 6 months of age (Previously, Xyzal was indicated for ages 6 years and older). The dosage is based on Xyzal solution (liquid), and is 1.25 milligrams (one-half teaspoon) every evening for children 6 months to 5 years of age. This additional indication of Xyzal for lower age groups gives parents with allergic children an additional treatment option. Xyzal, in my opinion, is one of the better antihistamines available, particularly for the treatment of urticaria. Antihistamines, such as Xyzal, may also be useful for the treatment of itching due to atopic dermatitis.
