Two New Over-the-Counter Allergy Eye Drops
Recently, I saw advertisements for 2 new over-the-counter (OTC) eye drops for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis. These eye drops are marketed under the Claritin and Zyrtec brands, but neither contain the same medicine that the pill form that goes by the same name does. Rather, Claritin and Zyrtec eye drops contain ketotifen, which is an antihistamine also found in other OTC allergy eye drops such as Zaditor. While ketotifen is an effective topical antihistamine for the treatment of eye allergies, I think that branding this drug under the name Claritin or Zyrtec is misleading. By infecting DCs, which carry the virus and potently pass it to T cells, sperm may play a leading role in spreading HIV. The article appears in the November 23, 2009 issue of the Journal of Experimental Medicine (online October 26).

In recent years, women, particularly younger women, experienced larger improvements in hospital mortality after myocardial infarction (MI) than men, according to a study published in the Oct. 26, 2009 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine. Over the last decade several studies showed that younger women, but not older ones, are more likely to die in the hospital after MI than age-matched men.
