A Meta-Analytic Review of the Effects of Childhood Abuse on Medical Outcomes in Adulthood
Objective: To summarize the relationship between abuse during childhood and physical health outcomes in adulthood and to examine the role of potential moderators, such as the type of health outcome assessed, gender, age, and the type of abuse. Studies using self-report assessment methods were compared with studies using objective or independently verifiable methods. Method: The current study is a quantitative meta-analysis comparing results from 78 effect sizes across 24 studies including 48,801 individuals. Results: Experiencing child abuse was associated with an increased risk of negative physical health outcomes in adulthood (effect size d = 0.42, 95% Confidence Interval = 0.39-0.45). Neurological and musculoskeletal problems yielded the largest effect sizes, followed by respiratory problems, cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal and metabolic disorders. Effect sizes were larger when the sample was exclusively female and when the abuse was assessed via self-report rather than

Identification of a New Splice Variant of the Human ABCC6 Transporter
ABCC6 is a member of the adenosine triphosphate-binding cassette (ABC) gene subfamily C that encodes a protein (MRP6) involved in active transport of intracellular compounds to the extracellular environment. Mutations in ABCC6 cause pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE), an autosomal recessive disorder of the connective tissue characterized by progressive calcification of elastic structures in the skin, the eyes, and the cardiovascular system. MRP6 is codified by 31 exons and contains 1503 amino acids. In addition to a full-length transcript of ABCC6, we have identified an alternatively spliced variant of ABCC6 from a cDNA of human liver that lacks exons 19 and 24. The novel isoform was named ABCC6 Δ19Δ24. PCR analysis from cDNA of cell cultures of primary human hepatocites and embr...

Journalist`s Vaccine Piece Spurs Hate Mail
Journalist Amy Wallace's article in the November issue of Wired Magazine about the passionate, and sometimes angry, debate over whether vaccines cause autism drew some vitriolic response. Wallace says vaccines have done such a good job of removing the visible threat of childhood diseases that some people see vaccination as a greater risk than childhood disease.

New Reviews: Philips Activity Monitor and Polar FT40 Heart Rate Monitor
I love gadgets, particularly gadgets that relate to exercise and working out - I know, I should probably go out and get a life. Until I find one, I'll happily continue reviewing exercise gear and gadgets that are worthy of the discerning exerciser. This week, I've posted a review of the Philips Activity Monitor. This little gadget, which is about the size of a Wheat Thin, fits in your pocket and monitors your body's movement throughout the day, letting you know (with flashing green indicator lights) how close you are to your activity goals. I love almost everything about the monitor and the website, which gives you cool graphs to track your goals. I did have a few issues with it as well, which you can read about in my review. Don't forget to leave a comment if you've had any experience with the Philips Activity Monitor. Next up is my review of the Polar FT40 Heart Rate Monitor. I love the look of this watch and I also like the innovative features included - like the EnergyPointe

Health Care Costs For Employees With Cardiac Risk Factors Reduced By Web-Based Nutrition Program
Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) and Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) have shown that an employer-sponsored, internet-based diet and exercise program shows promise as a low-cost benefit to lower healthcare costs for those at higher risk for above-average costs and healthcare utilization such as cardiac, hyperlipidemia, hypertension or diabetes patients. These findings appear in the current issue of the Journal of Medical Internet Research.

Tobacco Addiction Reduced By Crushing Cigarettes In A Virtual Reality Environment
Smokers who crushed computer-simulated cigarettes as part of a psychosocial treatment program in a virtual reality environment had significantly reduced nicotine dependence and higher rates of tobacco abstinence than smokers participating in the same program who grasped a computer-simulated ball, according to a study described in the current issue of CyberPsychology and Behavior, a peer-reviewed journal published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.
