A Meta-Analytic Review of the Effects of Childhood Abuse on Medical Outcomes in Adulthood
Objective: To summarize the relationship between abuse during childhood and physical health outcomes in adulthood and to examine the role of potential moderators, such as the type of health outcome assessed, gender, age, and the type of abuse. Studies using self-report assessment methods were compared with studies using objective or independently verifiable methods. Method: The current study is a quantitative meta-analysis comparing results from 78 effect sizes across 24 studies including 48,801 individuals. Results: Experiencing child abuse was associated with an increased risk of negative physical health outcomes in adulthood (effect size d = 0.42, 95% Confidence Interval = 0.39-0.45). Neurological and musculoskeletal problems yielded the largest effect sizes, followed by respiratory problems, cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal and metabolic disorders. Effect sizes were larger when the sample was exclusively female and when the abuse was assessed via self-report rather than

Medicine Looks Ahead at TED MED
“If you open your minds and let your imaginings run wild, you can see.” J. Craig Venter, the genomic scientist and founder of the J. Craig Venter Institute, was speaking yesterday about the potential for techniques involved in the field of synthetic life to improve medicine, but his words could have been applied to the all the talks during the opening session of TED MED (“TED” is for technology, entertainment, design). The conference is running from October 27 through 30 at the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego. Speakers also described advances in using stem cells for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.Venter reviewed recent advances in “software building its own hardware.” That is, by inserting DNA from one organism into another , scientists have been able to use existing cellular machinery to read that DNA--transforming one species to another. He mentioned Phase II clinical trials of a vaccine for meningitis developed with the techni

Fake a Last-Minute Halloween Costume
I thought my son's Halloween costume for a party Friday night was all set: he and his buddy were going to wear the same 'Thing 1' and 'Thing 2' T-shirts and rainbow wigs they wore last year. But the guys have other ideas. They have a little mutual joke that involves them saying 'I'm retired! I'm going to retire!' and they think it would be fun to go as retirees. And indeed, it would get a lot of laughs ... and require a lot of scrambling from us moms to figure out how to put it together. Robes and slippers, maybe? Gray wigs? T-shirts that say 'I'm retired'? Last year's ensembles were so easy, but that's not what parenting's about. If your special-needs cherub has a sudden change of costume heart, deciding at the last minute to wear one or ditch the one planned, try one of these emergency last-minute costumes you can throw together with what you've got lying around. New Reviews: Philips Activity Monitor and Polar FT40 Heart Rate Monitor
I love gadgets, particularly gadgets that relate to exercise and working out - I know, I should probably go out and get a life. Until I find one, I'll happily continue reviewing exercise gear and gadgets that are worthy of the discerning exerciser. This week, I've posted a review of the Philips Activity Monitor. This little gadget, which is about the size of a Wheat Thin, fits in your pocket and monitors your body's movement throughout the day, letting you know (with flashing green indicator lights) how close you are to your activity goals. I love almost everything about the monitor and the website, which gives you cool graphs to track your goals. I did have a few issues with it as well, which you can read about in my review. Don't forget to leave a comment if you've had any experience with the Philips Activity Monitor. Next up is my review of the Polar FT40 Heart Rate Monitor. I love the look of this watch and I also like the innovative features included - like the EnergyPointe

Non-Compliance Despite Having Poor Asthma Control
More than 1 in 3 patients referred to a specialty asthma clinic for poorly controlled asthma did not fill inhaled steroid prescriptions appropriately more than 50% of the time according to a study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Interestingly, none of the patients were suspected by the doctors as non-compliant prior to their referral and none of the patients admitted non-compliance as the reason for their poorly controlled asthma. Non-compliance was discovered in reviewing pharmacy records in a single payer system of health care. Medication compliance is not a one size fits all problem. Some patients have concerns about side effects and other patients have difficulties in obtaining medications. What is painfully clear from this study is that many asthmatics, even ones with really poorly controlled asthma, are not doing a good job of taking medications that are known to be beneficial. What do you think? Why do poorly controlled asthmatics

Tobacco Addiction Reduced By Crushing Cigarettes In A Virtual Reality Environment
Smokers who crushed computer-simulated cigarettes as part of a psychosocial treatment program in a virtual reality environment had significantly reduced nicotine dependence and higher rates of tobacco abstinence than smokers participating in the same program who grasped a computer-simulated ball, according to a study described in the current issue of CyberPsychology and Behavior, a peer-reviewed journal published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.
