Find Ways to Repurpose That Halloween Candy
If you're child's on a restricted diet, bounces off the wall with too much sugar, or just needs to avoid a long stay in the dentist's chair, big batches of high-calorie, high-sugar, hyper-loading sweet stuff can be a crisis. Rather than empty the trick-or-treat bag into the trash when the kids aren't looking -- or scarfing it all up yourself -- think about using those highly motivating but highly problematic goodies in a way that can make both you and your child happy. Here are a dozen for starters. Do you have a favorite way to use up useless treats? Share! Nine ``New`` Cardiac Risk Factors Are Found Wanting
In an era when 'preventive health' is all the rage, and we are all being urged to assess our risk factors for heart disease, developing and marketing new tools for cardiac risk assessment has become a big business. In fact, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) notes that more than 100 'emerging' cardiac risk factors are being advanced, by someone or another, as being potentially important. Accordingly, the USPSTF recently conducted several systematic reviews to evaluate the usefulness of nine of the most commonly promoted 'emerging' cardiovascular risk factors. They concluded that there is insufficient evidence to support routinely using any of them. Included in these now-disparaged risk factors are ones you've likely heard of and seen advertised - including C-reactive protein measurement and cardiac calcium scores. Read here about the nine cardiac risk factors which the USPSTF has found to be less than compelling. Nine 'New' Cardiac Risk Factors Are Found Wanting originall

Greater Use Of In-Patient Diagnostic Imaging Improves Patient Outcomes Without Significantly Impacting Costs
Hospitals that make greater use of inpatient diagnostic imaging exams achieve lower in-hospital mortality rates with little or no impact on costs, according to a peer-reviewed study of more than 1 million patient outcomes in more than 100 hospitals nationwide published in the November issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology (JACR).

Augmentative and alternative communication: a review of current issues
Abstract: Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) includes a range of approaches aimed at supporting or replacing speech for children and others for whom natural speech is not sufficient to meet their needs. For some children it also offers a support to the process of language learning. A wide range of medical conditions may lead to a child requiring AAC, either temporarily or on a more permanent basis. AAC systems may be unaided or aided, in the sense of requiring some form of equipment. They vary on the level of technology required from none to specialized computer-based devices offering synthesized speech output. Management of children requiring AAC must involve parents and a multidisciplinary team of health and education professionals, in addition to active involvement on the part of the child.
