Are You Ready For? Black Monday?
Security experts from PC Tools have pinpointed November 24 as potentially the peak of malicious activity for 2008. They reached their conclusion on the specific date after analyzing well over 500,000 machines from around the world.Guardian.co.uk states that 'the number of people shopping online this Christmas is expected to grow again this year, with internet sales in the UK alone predicted to hit £13.16bn - an increase of 15% over 2007.' It should be noted that November 28 will be the busiest shopping day of the year, a day so popular in fact that it even has its own name, 'Black Friday'. So logically thinking? the increase of malicious attacks, spam, spyware, and everything else evil should be expected to climb just mere days before people start entering in their private data for online purchases. Spam and all the other wrongdoing of others shouldn't sway anyone from shopping online, as this stuff is going on everyday. Just remember to use your common sense? if something sounds fi

Facebook Reconsiders, Lets You Pick Another Username
Last month, Facebook users were for the first time given the opportunity to reserve custom usernames in a move aimed at simplifying account URLs. Facebook had advised its users to approach the christening process very seriously as the usernames chosen by them would become inextricably tied to their profiles.  Those of you who are still ruing your questionable choice of username can now stop.  Facebook has spread its arms wide open for all those still drenched in a cocktail of desolation and regret. In an act that manifests its magnanimity, Facebook is now giving users the opportunity to change their usernames, but they only have one final shot at getting it right.    Image Credit: ReadWriteWeb

MySpace Looks Forward to a Future of Gaming and Ad Dollars
News Corp. Chief Digital Officer of News Corp. Jonathan Miller sat down with Fox Business in a video interview from a tech conference, and talked about MySpace’s future, among other things. The interview can be viewed here: Miller talks about how the company plans to shift the social network into more of an entertainment portal as Facebook has become quite a fierce competitor in terms of social communication on the web. Not that MySpace is abandoning that, but they are looking to get into more areas of entertainment, and according to Miller, part of this strategy will be offering some kind of gaming portal, where users can go and discover new games, and find people to play with. He makes it clear that he is talking about video games and not gambling. He says MySpace needs to get back to being involved with more aspects of popular culture, and needs to be cleaned up to provide a fast and cl

Massachusetts Says Encrypt It All!
Protecting personal data, like backup and disaster recovery, can be hard to get people excited about. Although we see the problem plainly and solutions are widely available, it can be hard to convince business management that technologies like encryption are worth the investment. But new regulations promise to change all that: Massachusetts and Nevada have enacted data protection laws that require encryption of personal information in transit. It's about time, too. Data losses have been all over the news for a decade, and everyone in IT knows that much of the data crossing networks around the world is still unencrypted. The situation with backup tapes is even worse: The majority of corporations still don't encrypt backup data, and most have poorly-controlled procedures for handling tapes. Every day, businesses create backup tapes containing their most critical and personal data and leave them sitting in a box for a stranger to pick up at a loading dock or reception desk.read more

Mobile Marketing Without Being Annoying
WebProNews recently ran an article looking at a study, which indicated that spending on mobile advertising would reach $760 million in 2009 (20% more than last year). A spokesperson with mobile advertising firm Crisp Wireless took notice and set us up with a Q&A with Chief Revenue Officer and former member of Yahoo Search's Strategic Alliances team, Tom Foran. It's looking more and more like mobile marketing will become unavoidable for businesses in the future. As competitors get on board, it's going to be harder to ignore for a company that doesn't want to get left in the dust. Have you tried out mobile marketing in any form? Tell us about your results. People have their mobile devices with them 18 hours a day, as Mike Wehrs, President and CEO of the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) recently told WebProNews. "Why wouldn't you want to be able to deliver relevant information to them?" he added. "Because if you do it well, it doesn't become an advertisement. It be
