LG Electronics grows Q3 mobile phone shipments 37% (Telecompaper) LG Electronics increased its third-quarter sales from mobile communications by 21 percent year-on-year to KRW 4.65 trillion. However, the operating margin for the division fell to 8.4 percent from 10.1 a year ago and 10.6 in Q2, due to price erosion and a higher proportion of low-end phones in the sales mix. Handsets generated sales of KRW 4.38 trillion, up 24.8 percent from the same quarter in 2008 but down 10.1 percent from Q2. Mobile phone shipments rose 37 percent year-over-year and 6 percent quarter-over-quarter to 31.6 million units. LG said it saw robust growth in emerging and European markets compared to Q2, thanks to products such as the Cookie and messaging phones. Shipments to North America slowed amid rising demand there for smartphones and prepaid phones, while demand in its home market Korea fell sharply, putting shipments there down 23 percent from Q2.
