Italian operators agree on SMS price cap (Telecompaper) Italian mobile operators have agreed to apply a cap on SMS prices, according to Italy's Communications Authority (AgCom). The price cap complies with EU roaming rules and sets a maximum text message price of EUR 0.11 (VAT not included) per SMS. Telecom Italia, Vodafone, 3 Italia and Wind will apply the new price from January 2010. AgCom and the competition authority launched an investigation into SMS, MMS and mobile data services earlier this year. The average price of a text in Italy is EUR 0.15, but this is pulled down by around a quarter of users taking SMS bundles. The remaining mobile users pay much more for SMS, according to the regulator's research. AgCom said it will also start a consultation on ways to improve transparency over mobile data prices, including a more effective warning system to tell users when they are nearing the end of their data allowance. Techworld.comKorean mobile TV operators to debut interactive services (Telecompaper) Korean mobile TV operators will introduce interactive services in December. The country's six terrestrial DMB operators will start 'DMB 2.0' services in December and allows customers to access a range of data services such as e-commerce, stock updates, and personal video recording, The Korea Times reports. Despite services being available shortly, there are no handsets as yet that support the technology. Satellite DMB operator TU Media, an SK Telecom affiliate, will launch a handset that supports interactive services before the end of this year. The mobile TV providers hope the new services will boost the struggling service. TU Media provides its services on a subscription bases and has about 2 million subscribers. The company has yet to break-even. The terrestrial DMB providers, which operate an advertising-funded service, saw revenues of less than KRW 10 billion in 2008. DMeurope.comMicrosoft Releases Beta of New Security Software Microsoft announced last November that they planned to discontinue their retail Windows Live OneCare security product and replace it with a new free antimalware offering. That time has come. Well, its coming soon. Microsoft just released the Beta of their new Microsoft Security Essentials software. Aimed at the consumer market, Microsoft Security Essentials leverages the research and resources of the Microsoft Malware Protection Center to identify and block viruses, spyware, and other malicious threats in real-time. It does not replace some of the other functionality of Windows Live OneCare such as defragmenting hard drives or backing up data, but it promises industry leading malware protection at a price that is hard to ignore in this economy- free. You can get a copy of the Beta version by visiting the Microsoft Security Essentials site. I have downloaded my copy and will post a review of the product in the coming weeks.
