Using Challenging Concepts To Learn Promotes Understanding Of New Material
Although conventional wisdom suggests that the best way to learn a difficult skill is to progress from easier problems to more difficult ones, research examining this issue has resulted in mixed outcomes. Psychologists wanted to pinpoint the best strategies for learning new information and found that the effects of the different training methods depended on the type of categories that the participants were learning.

Disappearing Superconductivity Reappears -- in 2-D
(PhysOrg.com) -- Scientists studying a material that appeared to lose its ability to carry current with no resistance say new measurements reveal that the material is indeed a superconductor ? but only in two dimensions. Equally surprising, this new form of 2-D superconductivity emerges at a higher temperature than ordinary 3-D superconductivity in other compositions of the same material. The research, conducted in part at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory, will appear in the November 2008 issue of Physical Review B.

Researchers learn that some `good cholesterol` isn`t good enough
If you think your levels of 'good cholesterol' are good enough, a new study published in the December 2008 issue of The FASEB Journal suggests that you may want to think again. In the report, researchers from the University of Chicago challenge the conventional wisdom that simply having high levels of good cholesterol (HDL) and low levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) is necessary for good heath. Instead, they show that the good cholesterol has varying degrees of quality and that poor quality HDL is actually bad for you.

Parkin mitochondria in the autophagosome
Narendra et al. (see p. 795 of this issue) have made an exciting new discovery that links the fields of mitochondrial quality control and the genetics of Parkinson's disease (PD). Through an elegant series of high-resolution imaging experiments, they are the first to provide evidence that the PARK2 gene product Parkin is selectively recruited to damaged or uncoupled mitochondria. This recruitment leads to the clearance of the organelles through the autophagosome, demonstrating a primary function for Parkin in the regulation of mitochondrial turnover. This work significantly increases our understanding of PD and provides a new framework for the development of therapeutic interventions.

The freedom of power
Come January, the nation will be gauging the President Elect's responses to the advice, influence and criticism of his advisors, cabinet members, media and other political leaders as he takes office.
