Cost of hatchling turtles` dash for freedom
A newly hatched sea turtle's first swim is the most critical of its life. Having run the gauntlet of air and land predators to make it to the sea, the tiny voyager must also evade hungry fish patrolling the beaches in its bid for freedom. For youngsters hatching on the Great Barrier Reef's coral cays the risks are high: as many as 30% perish as they head for safe deep waters. But how much does this headlong dash through the waves cost the intrepid hatchlings? Curious to know, David Booth from the University of Queensland decided to measure hatchling turtles' oxygen consumption rates as they swam for safety. Booth publishes his results in The Journal of Experimental Biology on 12th December 2008 at http://jeb.biologists.org.

News Scan Briefs: Blocking Sound with Holes
Blocking Sound with HolesAnyone kept awake by a neighbor’s television may be surprised to learn that a few holes drilled through a wall could lower the volume on sound. Francisco Meseguer of the Polytechnic University of Valencia in Spain and his colleagues placed a series of 20-centimeter-thick aluminum plates in a tank of water and found that perforated plates could diminish ultrasound waves passing through by up to another 10 decibels as compared with solid plates. This reduction was greatest when the spacing between the holes roughly equaled the sound’s wavelength. Evidently, the incoming sound interacts with regularly spaced holes, generating acoustic waves on the plate’s surface that destructively interfere with waves going through the plate. The findings, in the August 22 Physical Review Letters, could help soundproof machines while allowing cooling air through, remarks Meseguer, who says his team is now experimenting with audible sound. Oscillation Rules As The Pacific Cools
The latest image of sea-surface height measurements from the U.S./French Jason-1 oceanography satellite shows the Pacific Ocean remains locked in a strong, cool phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, a large, long-lived pattern of climate variability in the Pacific associated with a general cooling of Pacific waters. The image also confirms that El Niņo and La Niņa remain absent from the tropical Pacific.

Stanford researchers predict heat waves and crop losses in California
(Stanford University) Global warming will likely put enormous strain on California's water supply and energy systems and have a devastating impact on certain crops.Stanford researchers predicted outcomes based on projections from two different emission scenarios. One assumes a continuing moderate increase in greenhouse gas emissions until 2100; the other assumes emissions would increase until mid-century and then start dropping off. Both of the scenarios indicate there will be more frequent heat waves and generally rising temperatures.

Researchers finger the cause of `gravity fingers`
MIT researchers have found an elegant solution to a sticky scientific problem in basic fluid mechanics: Why water doesn't soak into soil at an even rate, but instead forms what looks like fingers of fluid flowing downward.
