Boosting Solar Cell Power Scientists are continuously improving the existing solar cells. Now they are taking the help of computer simulations and real lab testing. A group of physicists and engineers at MIT have discovered new methods to make the existing solar cells more efficient by 50%. Currently the most efficient solar cell gives 45% output [...]Posted in: Future Energy, PhotoVoltaics, Solar Power alternative-energy-news.infoFlowering plants speed post-surgery recovery Contact with nature has long been suspected to increase positive feelings, reduce stress, and provide distraction from the pain associated with recovery from surgery. Now, research has confirmed the beneficial effects of plants and flowers for patients recovering from abdominal surgery. Biologynews.netNanotechnology to repair the brain Neural engineering is an emerging discipline that uses engineering techniques to investigate the function and manipulate the behavior of the central or peripheral nervous systems. Neural engineering is highly interdisciplinary and relies on expertise from computational neuroscience, experimental neuroscience, clinical neurology, electrical engineering and signal processing of living neural tissue, and encompasses elements from robotics, computer engineering, neural tissue engineering, materials science, and nanotechnology. In order for neural prostheses to augment or restore damaged or lost functions of the nervous system they need to be able to perform two main functions: stimulate the nervous system and record its activity. To do that, neural engineers have to gain a full understanding of the fundamental mechanisms and subtleties of cell-to-cell signaling via synaptic transmission, and then develop the technologies to replicate these mechanisms with artificial devices and interface t nanowerk.comFacial expressions of emotion are innate, not learned, says new study Facial expressions of emotion are hardwired into our genes, according to a study published today in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. The research suggests that facial expressions of emotion are innate rather than a product of cultural learning. The study is the first of its kind to demonstrate that sighted and blind individuals use the same facial expressions, producing the same facial muscle movements in response to specific emotional stimuli. Biologynews.comStudy: Tolerance Can Lower Gay Kids` Suicide Risk Gay young adults have one of the highest rates of suicide attempts, and kids who are rejected by their parents have the most problems. New research says when a parent is neutral about a son or daughter being gay, or even only mildly critical, that goes a long way in reducing a child's risk. NPRHydrogen Hybrid Corp.: Hydrogen Hybrid, Corp. and The Queen Mary of Long Beach Go Green by Unveiling the First Hydrogen Class 8 Semi Trucks LOS ANGELES, CA (MARKET WIRE) Hydrogen Hybrid, Corp. (PINKSHEETS: HYDB) www.HydrogenHybridCorp.com announced today that in conjunction with The Queen Mary of Long Beach, CA, a class 8 semi truck modified with an 8x Mega Fuel Cell System will be on display for the media. The viewing will take place December 30, 2008 from noon to 4 p.m. and Wednesday, December 31, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in The Queen Mary parking lot. The 8x Mega Fuel Cell System can be installed on any class 8 semi truck and produces enough Hydrogen on board to cut the semi truck's emissions by 30-95%, increase its fuel mileage from 30-50%, and extend MarketwireStudy finds genes for 1918 `Spanish flu` pandemic A US-Japanese research team has announced it had isolated three genes that explain why the 1918 Spanish flu, believed to be the deadliest infectious disease in history, was so lethal. ABC.net.auEBs clip CLIPs to growing microtubule ends Proteins that track growing microtubule (MT) ends are important for many aspects of intracellular MT function, but the mechanism by which these +TIPs accumulate at MT ends has been the subject of a long-standing controversy. In this issue, Bieling et al. (Bieling, P., S. Kandels-Lewis, I.A. Telley, J. van Dijk, C. Janke, and T. Surrey. 2008. J. Cell Biol. 183:1223–1233) reconstitute plus end tracking of EB1 and CLIP-170 in vitro, which demonstrates that CLIP-170 plus end tracking is EB1-dependent and that both +TIPs rapidly exchange between a soluble and a plus end–associated pool. This strongly supports the hypothesis that plus end tracking depends on a biochemical property of growing MT ends, and that the characteristic +TIP comets result from the generation of new +TIP binding sites through MT polymerization in combination with the exponential decay of these binding sites. .jcb.orgNanotubes, exosomes, and nucleic acid-binding peptides provide novel mechanisms of intercellular communication in eukaryotic cells: implications in health and disease The prevailing view that eukaryotic cells are restrained from intercellular exchange of genetic information has been challenged by recent reports on nanotubes, exosomes, apoptotic bodies, and nucleic acid–binding peptides that provide novel pathways for cell–cell communication, with implications in health and disease. .jcb.orgThree-dimensional localization of CENP-A suggests a complex higher order structure of centromeric chromatin The histone H3 variant centromere protein A (CENP-A) is central to centromere formation throughout eukaryotes. A long-standing question in centromere biology has been the organization of CENP-A at the centromere and its implications for the structure of centromeric chromatin. In this study, we describe the three-dimensional localization of CENP-A at the inner kinetochore plate through serial-section transmission electron microscopy of human mitotic chromosomes. At the kinetochores of normal centromeres and at a neocentromere, CENP-A occupies a compact domain at the inner kinetochore plate, stretching across two thirds of the length of the constriction but encompassing only one third of the constriction width and height. Within this domain, evidence of substructure is apparent. Combined with previous chromatin immunoprecipitation results (Saffery, R., H. Sumer, S. Hassan, L.H. Wong, J.M. Craig, K. Todokoro, M.
