Johns Hopkins researchers discover new schizophrenia gene
Researchers at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine are one gene closer to understanding schizophrenia and related disorders. Reporting in the Jan. 9 issue of the American Journal of Human Genetics, the team describes how a variation in the neuregulin 3 gene influences delusions associated with schizophrenia.

Study: Heart CT Scans May Pose Risk
A new study in this week's Journal of the American Medical Association shows doses of radiation given in some types of CT scans for heart disease are potentially harmful. The scans are frequently used to look for heart disease in people who don't have symptoms, and the researchers say the high radiation dose needlessly raises the risk of cancer for these patients.

Mirna Therapeutics And UCSF Researchers Initiate Collaboration To Explore Therapeutic Potential Of MicroRNAs
Mirna Therapeutics ('Mirna'), a wholly owned subsidiary of Asuragen, Inc. and the University of California, San Francisco announce that they have entered into a collaboration agreement to evaluate the capacity of specific microRNAs to reduce or eliminate tumors in mouse models of cancer. The collaboration will include studies of cancer-related microRNAs that were discovered at both Mirna and UCSF as well as small RNAs that will be identified in research using mouse and cell models from UCSF.

Journal of American College of Surgeons study finds warm-up helps surgeons improve performance
New research published in the February issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons shows a warm-up of 15 to 20 minutes with simple surgical exercises prior to an operation leads to a substantial increase in proficiency of surgical skills in surgeons of all experience levels. The researchers found that a warm-up of both psychomotor and cognitive skills raises surgeons' alertness to a higher level for surgical procedures and improves performance for fatigued surgeons.

High pressure yields novel single-element `compound`
An international team of researchers including scientists at the Carnegie Institution has discovered a new chemical compound that consists of a single element -- boron. Chemical compounds are conventionally defined as substances consist of two or more elements, but the researchers found that a high pressure and temperature pure boron can assume two distinct forms that bond together to create a novel 'compound' called boron boride.

(American Chemical Society) ACS Publications has introduced a pilot program, called 'Just Accepted', to deliver journal content online two to seven weeks faster than before. 'Just Accepted' manuscripts have been peer-reviewed and accepted for publication. They will be posted online prior to technical editing, formatting, and author proofing.
