How to create less selfish societies?
(GPEARI, Portugal) -- Cooperation, despite being now considered the third force of evolution, just behind mutation and natural selection, is difficult to explain in the context of an evolutionary process based on competition between individuals and selfish behaviour. But this puzzle, that has haunted scientists for decades, is now a little closer to be solved by research about to be published in the journal Physical Review Letters.

Alternative Jet Fuels Tested by NASA
Jets, concords and Boeings make our lives and traveling easier and faster. Rising prices are forcing companies and institutions to look for alternative fuels. NASA and 11 other research groups are testing two non-petroleum-based jet fuels that will be viable for commercial jets too and aviation companies can heave a sigh of relief [...]Posted in: Ethanol

News Scan Briefs: Weak on the Nano Risk
Amnio Alternative Amniocentesis and other prenatal tests designed to assess fetal health carry a small risk of miscarriage. Now Chinese researchers may have found an alternative diagnostic method based on a technique that distinguishes maternal DNA from fetal DNA in the mother’s blood. That ability could lead to simple, no-risk blood tests that determine whether a fetus has a problem caused by single-gene mutations, such as cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anemia. The fetal DNA, which tends to be shorter than that of the mother, is duplicated and subjected to a “molecular counting” technique that tallies both mutant and normal genetic material. Researchers can use the data to determine whether the fetus has inherited a monogenetic disease. The San Diego–based biotech company Sequenom plans to develop the test for commercial distribution. The study appears in the December 16, 2008, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA. --Gary Stix [More]

Extra Virgin Olive Oil Helps To Combat Breast Cancer, According To Spanish Scientists
UGR News Researchers of the Catalonian Institute of Oncology (Spain) and the University of Granada (Spain) have discovered that extra virgin olive oil may help to combat breast cancer, according to a paper published in the last issue of the renowned scientific journal BMC Cancer. The scientists have confirmed the bioactivity of polyphenols (natural antioxidants) present in olive oil in breast cancer cell lines.

Mutant Rats Resist Warfarin
A new series of mutations have been discovered that allow rats to resist the effects of the popular poison warfarin. Research published in the open access journal BMC Genetics describes eighteen new genetic changes found in rats from four continents. Simone Rost from the University of Wuerzburg, Germany, and an international team of researchers studied more than 250 rats and mice from anticoagulant-exposed areas in Europe, East Asia, South Africa and the Americas.

Limitations Of Genetic Screening Reported In Public Library Of Science Study
We may be a long way off from using genetics to reliably gauge our risks for specific diseases, say researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health in a study published on Feb. 5 in the online journal PLoS Genetics. Yet, many companies currently offer personalized genetic testing for diseases like cancer, heart disease and diabetes, and tout the ability of DNA testing to predict future health risks.

Cognitive Training Can Alter The Biochemistry Of The Brain
Researchers at the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet have shown for the first time that the active training of the working memory brings about visible changes in the number of dopamine receptors in the human brain. The study, which is published in the prestigious scientific journal Science, was conducted with the help of PET scanning and provides deeper insight into the complex interplay between cognition and the brain's biological structure.

Study Sheds New Light On Role Of Vitamin D In MS
A team of researchers have demonstrated a direct link between a particular genetic variant and vitamin D which can determine an individual's risk of developing MS. The new evidence emerged from a study published in the journal PLoS Genetics which found that the most important gene implicated in susceptibility to MS, the variant gene DRB1 can be switched on by vitamin D in laboratory experiments.
