Carbon Capture and Storage Progressing Toward Feasibility
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) has the potential to cut global Co2 emissions dramatically. We’re talking huge cuts. It has been estimated that a plant implementing CCS can cut emissions by 80-90 percent compared with a plant that doesn’t use CCS. Sounds great, right? Well, there are some some problems. Cost is the number one challenge that CCS faces. “Applying it would significantly increase the cost of electricity beyond what society is likely willing to pay,” said Sarah Forbes,  a World Resources Institute Senior Associate. Another challenge is that no fully integrated demonstrations have taken place. The pieces have been tested individually, but the entire puzzle is yet to be seen. Forbes describes CCS and its current challenges in more detail: This post contains additional media. Click here to view the full post. of this story »

From AA to Alpha
I'm taking the Alpha Course, Christianity's answer to philosophy classes. Follow my progress every Friday over the coming weeks'Is this it?' asks the back of the 276. It's an advert for the Alpha Course, Christianity's pseudo-philosophical middle class recruitment drive, public transport again being the preferred method of mass communication for religious matters.Alpha is officially described as being an 'opportunity for anyone to explore the Christian faith in a relaxed setting'. It was created in the 1970s at the Holy Trinity Brompton, a big church in South Kensington, but was revamped in the 90s and has since become a global phenomenon. They claim that 2 million people have attended in the UK and 13 million worldwide. That makes it a significant movement in modern Christianity. Alpha's enormous wealth, mostly from private donations, is most visible in its advertising, not just on buses, but also on big and small screens. But within and without the Christian faith Alpha is controversi

Bridging the Science Gap
Whatever happened to the war on science? During the Bush administration, many scientists felt as if they were on the outs when it came to issues ranging from global climate change to stem cell research and even evolutionary biology. President Barack Obama came into office pledging to 'restore our commitment to science' - and some of the scientists who were once on the outs suddenly found themselves in the inner circle. Today, Obama is leading the charge on climate policy and stem cells, and he's got a Nobel-winning physicist pushing for energy alternatives. Sounds like the war is over, right?

A high-level United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) gathering wrapped up today with a call for global cooperation to tackle public health challenges in the face of interrelated food, economic and climate crises which are stalling efforts to reach development targets. In the Ministerial Declaration adopted by consensus in Geneva at the end of the four-day High Level Segment, participants stressed that ?urgent and collective efforts? are crucial to improve public health, especially as the food crisis has affected the nutrition levels of people in poorer countries.
