Topeka School to Become Memorial
When Sumner Elementary School in Topeka, Kansas refused to allow black students to enroll in their school, local parents sued the school board in what became the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case which made segregation illegal in the U.S. The school was in operation until 1996. After that, the school was used for storage and even though the building was named a National Historic Landmark in 1987, it soon fell into serious disrepair. The building recently went up for auction and Rev. W. R. Portee purchased it for $89,000. He hopes to renovate the building and turn it into both a community center and a civil rights memorial. For more information about the school and its renovation, see The New York Times article.
