New Jersey regulators today are expected to approve plans by four utilities to spend money on solar power projects.

The money is for upgrading the electricity grid and providing guarantees for renewable energy projects. Solar, wind and biofuels could benefit.

The Ireland Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government has announced a EUR20 million (GBP17 million) scheme to build seven low carbon social housing developments, Faversham House Group reported. The government said that the residents of the new homes, to be built to a Building Energy Rating of at least A2, the second highest, will also benefit from very low energy bills.

New figures show that Iowa remains No. 2 in the nation in wind power. The American Wind Energy Association reported this week that Iowa added 160 megawatts of wind-generation capacity in the second quarter of the year, bringing its generation capacity to 3,043. Texas remains far ahead of Iowa in wind energy 8,361 megawatts.

U.S. EPA's planned toughening of health standards for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emissions is not tough enough for some advocacy groups.The EPA proposal would set a new one-hour maximum NO2 limit to prevent spikes in air pollution. The proposal also involves setting up new monitors in locations with the highest concentrations, like major roads in urban areas.
