Tide starts to turn for fish stocks
Regions in Iceland, California and north-east US show signs of recovery but North Sea and Ireland still overfishedGlobal efforts to combat overfishing are starting to turn the tide to allow some fish stocks to recover, new analysis shows. Research from an international team of scientists shows that a handful of major fisheries across the world have managed to reduce the rate at which fish are exploited. The experts say their study offers hope that overfishing can be brought under control, but they warn that fishermen in Ireland and the North Sea are still catching too many fish to allow stocks to recover. Some 63% of assessed fish stocks worldwide still require rebuilding, the scientists report.'Across all regions we are still seeing a troubling trend of increasing stock collapse,' said Dr Boris Worm, an ecologist at Dalhousie University in Canada. Bacteria pack their own demise
[NEWS] Brussels - Numerous pathogens contain an 'internal time bomb', a deadly mechanism that can be used against them. After years of work, VIB researchers at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) were able to determine the structure and operating mechanism of the proteins involved. This clears the road for finding ways to set the clock on this internal time bomb and, hopefully, in the process developing a new class of antibiotics. The research was accepted for publication by top journal Molecular C…

Scientists obtain real time snapshot of the learning process
[NEWS] To learn from experience, it is essential to know whether a past action was associated with a desired outcome. Now, scientists have demonstrated how this information can be coded by a single cell. The research, published in the July 30th issue of the journal Neuron, provides strong support for a neural mechanism that allows reward signals to be combined over time to drive successful learning. The lateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) and the basal ganglia (BG) have been shown to play a key rol…
