Structure of protective protein in the eye lens revealed
The human eye lens consists of a highly concentrated mix of several proteins. Protective proteins prevent these proteins from aggregating and clumping. If this protective function fails, the lens blurs and the patient develops cataracts. Two research groups at the Department of Chemistry of the Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM) have succeeded in explaining the molecular architecture of this kind of protective protein. Their findings, which are published online in the current early edition of PNAS (Proceedings of the national academy of Sciences), shed new light on the work of these proteins and may be able to help in the development of new treatments.

Fossil Fuels without the Fossils?
A theory long on the fringes of petroleum science gained some support from new research this week, but it is probably not enough to launch the concept into the mainstream. The idea: What if fossil fuels were not fossil after all? What if hydrocarbons could form from chemical reactions deep inside the earth, rather than from the "pressure cooking" of organic matter? [More]

Scientists Say Some Fisheries Are Recovering
A new report in the journal Science, crediting good management, says some over-fished ecosystems are improving and fish numbers are up. Marine biologist Boris Worm — who in 2006 warned that without action many fish populations could be gone by 2048 — describes the study's findings.

On This Day in Science History - August 1
August 1st is Pierre Antoine de Monet, Chevalier de la Marck's birthday. He was more widely known as simply Jean-Baptiste Lemarck. Lemarck was the French biologist who developed the first theory of evolution called Lemarckism. Lemarckism was a popular theory of evolution where an organism passed on characteristics it collected during its lifetime to future generations. This was known as soft inheritance. Another aspect of inheritance was the idea of use and disuse. An organism would lose characterists it didn't use anymore and develop ones that were useful. For example, giraffes grew longer necks to reach leaves at the tops of trees, and their children would have longer necks as well. Lemarckism fell out of vogue when Darwin came on the scene. But Darwin and the later theories of Mendelian genetics haven't completely replaced it. Some scientists are applying the idea of soft inheritance to single celled organisms. Scientists have observed single celled organisms and prions develop ne
