Big News NetworkGeobiologists propose that the earliest complex organisms fed by absorbing ocean buffet [NEWS] Research at Virginia Tech has shown that the oldest complex life forms — living in nutrient-rich oceans more than 540 million years ago – likely fed by osmosis. The researchers studied two groups of modular Ediacara organisms, the fern-shaped rangeomorphs and the air mattress-shaped erniettomorphs. These macroscopic organisms, typically several inches in size, absorbed nutrients through their outer membrane, much like modern microscopic bacteria, according to the cover story of the Aug. 25, 2009 … LifeSciencesWorld.comBig Fish, Global Fish Photo © Georgette Douwma / Getty Images. Whale sharks, the largest fish in the sea, all belong to one big school. Instead of breaking down into lots of little groups scattered throughout their range, whale sharks all intermix in a single breeding population. This is pretty impressive, considering the range of whale sharks stretches in a broad band around the planet's belly, through tropical and warm temperate seas between 30°N and 35°S. The 'global' nature of the whale shark population was discovered by a team of scientists led by Jennifer Schmidt of the University of Illinois at Chicago. Schmidt's team surveyed sharks in three different oceans--the Pacific Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Indian Ocean. They took tissue samples from the sharks and then used those samples to perform a suite of genetic tests. The tests revealed that there was little variation among sharks from the three oceans. Sharks from the Indian Ocean were genetically very similar to those of the e AboutAirlines To Use Synthetic Diesel for Ground Service Equipment The Air Transport Association of America, Inc. But in June, the Obama administration disbanded the council ahead of schedule because, as The New York Times reported, it ?was designed by the Bush administration to be ?a philosophically leaning advisory group? that favored discussion over developing a shared consensus.? Unfortunately, the mass of that cylinder appears to be changing. Now, a group of physicists wants to clear up the problem by redefining the kilogram, with the help of a very sensitive scale. NPR1 2 |
