Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells Created From Fat Cells
The standard way to make induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells for medical research is to scrape skin cells and mix up their internal clocks, coaxing them back into pluripotency over a matter of weeks. But now researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine have turned their attention to another cell type in abundant supply: fat cells. The team of cardiologists and plastic surgeons found adipose fat cells to be much more efficient than skin cells at turning back into stem cells. [More]

Designing probiotics that ambush gut pathogens
[NEWS] Researchers in Australia are developing diversionary tactics to fool disease-causing bacteria in the gut. Many bacteria, including those responsible for major gut infections, such as cholera, produce toxins that damage human tissues when they bind to complex sugar receptors displayed on the surface of cells in the host's intestine. At the Society for General Microbiology's meeting at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, today (8 September), Professor James Paton and colleagues from the Uni…

Osteoporosis drug withheld
Better, but more expensive, treatment will not be assessed by Nice for three yearsThousands of British women are being denied modern drugs to treat a common bone-thinning disease because guidelines surrounding its use are too stringent, doctors warn. The majority of patients who are diagnosed with osteoporosis, which causes the bones to become dangerously brittle in old age, are prescribed a weekly pill, even though a more effective once-a-year injection is available.A significant number of patients refuse to take the weekly alendronate pill because of its uncomfortable side-effects, but are not offered the alternative of a drug infusion called zoledronate, because they are not ill enough to qualify for it, doctors said.'It's bad medical practice. You can't tell a patient they can't have this treatment because they are not ill enough,' said David Reid, professor of rheumatology at Aberdeen University.Half of women and a fifth of men over 50 suffer bone fractures due to osteoporosis, and

Young Lemon Sharks Stay Close to Home
Lemon sharks in the waters around the Bahamas stay close to their birthplace as they mature, a recent study has revealed. Previously, little was known about the movements of the sharks after they reached 3 years of age. scientists were uncertain whether they dispersed into new territory as they matured or if they remained close to their nursery sites. But these new findings reveal that more than half of the juvenile lemon sharks sampled were born in local shark nurseries. The long-term study was conducted by scientists from the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science at Stony Brook University, University of Miami, and Field Museum of Chicago. From 1995 to 2007, the researchers sampled sharks in Bimini, Bahamas, a cluster of subtropical islands on the western edge of the Great Bahamas Bank, about 86 kilometers east of Miami. The two largest of the islands in the area, North Bimini and South Bimini, form an arch of land that shelters a shallow, mangrove-fringed lagoon. There are seve
