UK schools minister fails to grasp fundamentals of maths
Schools minister Diana Johnson is unimpressed with research that shows children's understanding of ratio and algebra has not progressed since the early 1980s. She describes these as 'topics' (Report, 5 September). Ratio is a fundamental concept that has to be understood to use mathematics in science, engineering, economics and almost any mathematics in upper secondary school and above. Algebra is straightforwardly the language of mathematics. These are crucial for further study in the same way as vocabulary is for English, or line for art. They are not 'topics', and children's problems understanding them were worrying in the 1980s and are even more so now. I realise that a government which has spent millions on improving standards has to snap back at such a research finding, but at least they could snap back with some mathematical comprehension.Anne WatsonProfessor of mathematics education, university of OxfordMathematicsMathematicsguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limi

Work conditions impact parents` food choices
(Elsevier Health Sciences) How working parents cope with competing demands on their time that can compromise food choices for the family and how work conditions are related to food choice coping strategies are the subjects of a study in the September/October issue of the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior. Findings suggest that better work conditions may be associated with more positive strategies such as more home-prepared meals, eating with the family, keeping healthful food at work, and less meal skipping.

In a study published in the September 2009 issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, researchers from the South Dakota State university, Brookings, report that a culturally-sensitive educational program based on the Medicine Wheel Model for Nutrition shows promise in changing dietary patterns in an American Indian population and impacting glycemic control.

Fermi Large Area Telescope reveals pulsing gamma-ray sources
(Naval Research Laboratory) scientists at the Naval Research Laboratory Space Science Division and a team of international researchers have positively identified cosmic sources of gamma-ray emissions through the discovery of 16 pulsating neutron stars. Using the Large Area Telescope, the primary instrument on NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope satellite, the discoveries were made by conducting blind frequency searches on the sparse photon data provided by the LAT.

Scientists discover surprise in Earth`s upper atmosphere
(University of California - Los Angeles) UCLA atmospheric scientists have discovered a basic mode of energy transfer from the solar wind to the Earth's magnetosphere, which was previously unknown. The research could improve the safety and reliability of spacecraft that operate in the upper atmosphere. 'It's like finding it got hotter when the sun went down,' said Larry Lyons, UCLA professor of atmospheric and oceanic sciences.
