College Students Turn Classic British Roadster Into Electric Car
In its time, the MGB was one of the most modern sports cars available. Featuring some of the first crumple zones to ever be included in a production car, as well as a fast-for-its-day 0-60 mph acceleration of 11 seconds. It was also a beauty. So it’s clear why, in 1984, an engineering professor with a brand-spanking new PhD, who had just begun his professional career at the University of South Carolina, would think it might be cool to drive a 1972 MGB around with the top down in that climatically-pleasant area of the US. And so began Professor Roger Dougal’s obsession with his MGB. of this story »

Glowing Blue Bananas
Ripening bananas glow blue in UV light.Image: Simone Moser, University of Innsbruck, Austria, et al. Researchers have discovered that when chlorophyll in bananas starts to break down and age, it causes bananas to glow with a blue color under ultraviolet(UV) light. Under normal light however, all we see are brown spots. The researchers state that this blue glow serves to attract insects and other animals that can detect the glow. So how does this reaction occur? As the banana ages, chlorophyll breaks down into byproducts called FCC(fluorescent chlorophyll catabolites) that glow under UV light. The byproducts then gather and form a ring around dead banana peel tissue. Since the glowing molecules are located very close to the dying tissue of the banana, researchers believe that the chlorophyll byproducts play a role in deconstructing dying cells. Further research into this process could give more insight into apoptosis or programmed cell death. Learn more about this report: Bananas Gon

One Shot for Swine Flu Vaccine Instead of Two
Surprising news from the New York Times today. Clinical trials of the H1N1 vaccine are showing protection at just one dose. Since news of the vaccine has come out in the last several months, it has been thought that 2 shots would be needed. As a result, the vaccine will be available to more people in the high risk groups, including pregnant women, children, teens and childcare workers. In addition, vaccines will likely now be available in poorer countries, where before this was unknown. According to the Times, “"This is definitely a big deal," said Dr. John J. Treanor, a vaccine expert at the University of Rochester. "People had been planning for a scenario that would require two doses." "This will take the edge off the nail-biting," Dr. Treanor added. of this story »
