Now researchers say that green tea can improve bone health by promoting bone formation and inhibiting bone deterioration. A certain component of green tea known as epigallocatechin (EGC), was found to heighten the activity of enzymes that promote bone growth and help to strengthen bones. EGC was also shown to help prevent bone deterioration by inhibiting certain cells that weaken bones. The researchers hope that information gained from the study can be used to develop future treatments for osteoporosis and other bone maladies. Guest editor Kim Stanley Robinson explores the 'literature of our time' and challenges leading authors to write flash fiction about the world 100 years from now NewScientist.comStudy on effect of electricity on liquids bucks conventional science (PhysOrg.com) -- Whether gazing into lava lamps or watching balsamic vinegar mix with olive oil, people have long been transfixed by the seemingly mystical way that droplets of one liquid find each other within another liquid and join together. Conventional scientific wisdom has held that this merging of liquid droplets, a process called coalescence, is enhanced by applying an electrical field, but a new study, which will be published in the Sept. 17 issue of the journal Nature, shows that an increased electrical field actually can prevent droplets from merging. Physorg.comTop Scientists Get to the Bottom of Gay Male Sex Role Preferences It’s my impression that many straight people believe that there are two types of gay men in this world: those who like to give, and those who like to receive. No, I’m not referring to the relative generosity or gift-giving habits of homosexuals. Not exactly, anyway. Rather, the distinction concerns gay men’s sexual role preferences when it comes to the act of anal intercourse. But like most aspects of human sexuality , it’s not quite that simple.I’m very much aware that some readers may think that this type of article does not belong on this website. But the great thing about good science is that it’s amoral, objective and doesn’t cater to the court of public opinion. Data don’t cringe; people do. Whether we’re talking about a penis in a vagina or one in an anus, it’s human behavior all the same. The ubiquity of homosexual behavior alone makes it fascinating. Representative Bart Gordon of Tennessee, chair of the House Committee on Science and Technology, has warned that countries such as China and India will trample the U.S. economy in the near future without major improvements in teaching. Indeed, our schools are falling behind. In the 2006 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA)--a respected measure of achievement around the globe--the average science score of U.S. 15-year-olds dropped below that of teens in 28 out of 57 participating countries. (In math, U.S. students fared even worse, lagging behind their peers in 34 nations.)Despite decades of reform, America has made only modest gains in the science classroom, particularly in high schools. Two recent reports from the National Research Council (NRC), however, offer novel strategies.
