The Arizona RepublicScientists find gene that stops some cancers in their tracks Scientists have identified a gene they believe plays a major role in more than half of all breast cancers and a significant portion of other tumours. The gene, which helps to stop cancer cells in their tracks, came to light after researchers noticed it was missing from tissues that had been removed from breast cancers for testing. The lack of the gene has also been implicated in half of all cases of colon and prostate cancer, and a quarter of ovarian and bladder tumours.Cancer charities described the discovery as a 'major step forward' that could open up new ways to screen for and treat the disease.Paul Edwards, a molecular biologist at Cambridge University, said the discovery could be the most important cancer-suppressing gene of the past 20 years. 'This is a gene lost in a quarter to a half of common cancers, so it is clearly playing a really important role,' Edwards said.Scientists have long known that cancerous tissues are often missing fragments of chromosomes, the tightly coiled p GuardianGene found that stops some cancers Scientists have identified a gene they believe plays a major role in more than half of all breast cancers and a significant portion of other tumours. The gene, which helps to stop cancer cells in their tracks, came to light after researchers noticed it was missing from tissues that had been removed from breast cancers for testing. Topix.netHydrogen-Powered Charger Developed in Taiwan In Taiwan, a new charger technology claims to be able to charge phones without even being plugged into an outlet. That’s because it taps into the power of hydrogen as a fuel source, and is expected to help put Taiwan in the list of purveyor of green technologies. Scientists from Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute recently unveiled a charger powered by hydrogen. According to source, the device can fully charge a phone within a couple of hours, although the amount of hydrogen fuel used for that span of time wasn’t mentioned. Tsau Fanghei of the research team says they “hope the hydrogen-powered device can replace current mobile phone recharge systems in 2012.” of this story » Green OptionsResearch On Aging Wins Americans Nobel In Medicine Three American scientists who made key discoveries about how living cells age have received the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. topix.net1 2 3 4 5 |
