Scientists decode human genome`s instruction manual . 'Epigenome' maps how genes work together. Hope of new drugs to treat cancer and schizophreniaAlmost a decade after the human genome project lay bare the building blocks of life, scientists have figured out how they work together to create a living person. The genome project identified about 25,000 genes that are needed to make a healthy human being, but said nothing about how they combine to produce everything from hearts and minds to legs and livers. Now researchers in California have published what is effectively the first manual to show how genes are orchestrated inside cells - a milestone that promises to revolutionise scientists' understanding of human development and how it can sometimes go wrong. Many scientists believe the work will lead to new treatments for life-threatening diseases such as cancer, and possibly mental disorders such as schizophrenia. The work is also expected to shed light on intriguing studies that suggest how we live today can have striking repercussions for GuardianRelevance of Clean Coal Technology As intellectuals world over are harping on the clean usage of coal or how cleaner coal can be industrial nations are once again on the back foot and many of them have asked their scientists to actively pursue Clean Coal technologies and come up with a viable solution to cut down on CO2 emissions physicspost.comToday on New Scientist: 14 October 2009 Today's stories on newscientist.com, at a glance, including: how your smartphone could rat you out, the first shots fired in the war on booze, and some very creepy macaques NewScientist.comGene tweak boosts fly sex appeal Removing chemical signals can make fruitflies 'irresistible' to other flies - regardless of gender or species, scientists find. BBCQuantum-limited Measurement Method for Nanosensors (PhysOrg.com) -- (PhysOrg.com) -- A team of scientists from the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics and the Ludwig Maximilians University have succeeded in applying a novel optical method to nano-mechanical oscillators. New fabrication techniques have enabled the development of on-chip mechanical elements whose dimensions are on the nanometer scale. Their application, however, has been limited by the lack of sufficiently sensitive techniques for measuring the motion of these tiny devices. Physorg.comAging heart can be prevented, say scientists HONG KONG (Reuters) - Scientists in Japan said they have uncovered evidence that shows it may be possible to delay or prevent heart failure in humans. ReutersSmile! It Could Make You Happier We smile because we are happy, and we frown because we are sad. But does the causal arrow point in the other direction, too? A spate of recent studies of botox recipients and others suggests that our emotions are reinforced--perhaps even driven--by their corresponding facial expressions.Charles Darwin first posed the idea that emotional responses influence our feelings in 1872. “The free expression by outward signs of an emotion intensifies it,” he wrote. The esteemed 19th-century psychologist William James went so far as to assert that if a person does not express an emotion, he has not felt it at all. Although few scientists would agree with such a statement today, there is evidence that emotions involve more than just the brain. The face, in particular, appears to play a big role. Now, a research team at the University of Leicester in England has announced the existence of what may have been a transitional pterosaur, Darwinopterus ('Darwin wing,' named after the discoverer of the theory of evolution). Why is Darwinopterus (over 20 fossils of which have been found in northeastern China) considered to be a transitional form? Well, according to reconstructions by the English team, this pterosaur had an unusually large head and beak, but a relatively puny body with a long (i.e., primitive) tail. As one of the scientists is quoted as saying in this National Geographic article, Darwinopterus 'is a really cool creature, becaus AboutExperts warn glaciers in Indian Kashmir melting SRINAGAR, India (AP) -- Indian Kashmir's glaciers are melting fast because of rising temperatures, threatening the water supply of millions of people in the Himalayan region, a new study by Indian scientists says....
