Dozens of New York lawyers have reached into their pockets to helpBarack Obama defray the cost of an inauguration that many think will be,in the words of one, 'for the ages.' Another lawyer said it was'important to be a part of an unbelievable first in American history.'Altogether, Obama's inaugural committee has collected about $42.1million from private donors, according to a committee spokesman and acompilation prepared by the group Public Citizen.

Appeals Court Orders Michigan To Restore 5,500 Voters To Rolls
CINCINNATI - A federal appeals court late Wednesday cleared the way for 5,500 illegally purged voters to be returned to the rolls in time for Election Day. The U.S. Appeals Court for the Sixth Circuit rejected Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land's request not to enforce an earlier court ruling that declared the state's voter removal programs illegal. The appeals court decision is the latest victory in a lawsuit filed in September by the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Michigan, Advancement Project and the law firm of Pepper Hamilton LLP.

Federal Court Upholds Native American Voting Rights In South Dakota Lawsuit
ST. LOUIS - A federal appeals court today affirmed a decision protecting the rights of Native American voters in Martin, South Dakota. Siding with the American Civil Liberties Union, the U.S. Appeals Court for the Eight Circuit ordered local officials to correct violations of the Voting Rights Act that prevented Native Americans from having an equal opportunity to participate in the political process and elect representatives of their choice.

BALTIMORE - With the filing of Maryland Public Information Act (MPIA) requests with local governments across the state to help gather information regarding local laws and policies towards immigrants, the American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland today announced the creation of our first Immigrants rights project. The new initiative will be headed by Skadden Fellow Ajmel Quereshi, who will spend two years in the ACLU of Maryland's office to address a broad range of legal issues affecting the rights of all immigrants in the state.
