Orange Spotlight - January 19, 2009 The Syracuse Orange is heating up in the early-goings of the 2009 winter season. Currently, the men's and women's basketball teams are off to strong starts in their respective seasons as the men have jetted out to a 17-2 overall record, with a 5-1 total in the taxing BIG EAST conference. The women are 8-1 at home with a 13-5 overall record, 2-3 in conference play. In its first season, the Syracuse women's ice hockey team has compiled a 3-13-3 record. In the Orange's last three conference battles, Syracuse managed to go the distance with Robert Morris and Niagara, twice, forcing three-consecutive overtime draws. Each tie earned SU a point in the CHA. The Syracuse men's and Syracuse hosted several schools to knock the dust off the cleats for some spirited competition. The Orange performed well in both track and the field events in what looks to be a very promising season for the SU tracksters. Fog, mist and haze have become less frequent and have contributed, they calculate, to between 10% and 20% of the warming trend during that period. The change is down to reduced air pollution, the scientists think.Robert Vautard at the Atomic Energy Commission in Gif sur Yvette, France, and colleagues, looked at the number of 'low-visibility' events, where visibility fell to under 8km. They found a 50% drop since the 1970s, which they call a 'massive decline'.Fog, mist and haze block sunlight, and the team reckons the clearing of the air could have contributed around 10-20% of the European warming trend over the period.
