Orange Spotlight - January 19, 2009
The Syracuse Orange is heating up in the early-goings of the 2009 winter season. Currently, the men's and women's basketball teams are off to strong starts in their respective seasons as the men have jetted out to a 17-2 overall record, with a 5-1 total in the taxing BIG EAST conference. The women are 8-1 at home with a 13-5 overall record, 2-3 in conference play. In its first season, the Syracuse women's ice hockey team has compiled a 3-13-3 record. In the Orange's last three conference battles, Syracuse managed to go the distance with Robert Morris and Niagara, twice, forcing three-consecutive overtime draws. Each tie earned SU a point in the CHA. The Syracuse men's and Syracuse hosted several schools to knock the dust off the cleats for some spirited competition. The Orange performed well in both track and the field events in what looks to be a very promising season for the SU tracksters. The Syracuse tennis squad is raring to get things rolling next weekend as the Orange travels t

Clearer skies over Europe as fog halved in 30 years
Europe has become less foggy over the past three decades, according to scientists who have examined weather records across the continent. Fog, mist and haze have become less frequent and have contributed, they calculate, to between 10% and 20% of the warming trend during that period. The change is down to reduced air pollution, the scientists think.Robert Vautard at the Atomic Energy Commission in Gif sur Yvette, France, and colleagues, looked at the number of 'low-visibility' events, where visibility fell to under 8km. They found a 50% drop since the 1970s, which they call a 'massive decline'.Fog, mist and haze block sunlight, and the team reckons the clearing of the air could have contributed around 10-20% of the European warming trend over the period. Europe has warmed by 0.5C a decade - more than predicted by climate change models.Writing in the journal Nature Geoscience, the scientists describe how they analysed data from 342 weather stations, and found 'a massive decline of low-v

Gordon`s Goal Locks Up Third Straight CHA Point
NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. - In the latter tilt of a two-game set at Niagara (4-16-4, 1-3-2), the Syracuse women's ice hockey team (3-13-3, 0-9-3) locked up its third point in the CHA conference standings with the second-straight 1-1 overtime affair at Dwyer Arena on Sunday afternoon. After playing in 18 games without an overtime decision, the Orange has skated to three consecutive overtime draws. Sophomore forward Rebecca Gordon (St. Catharines, Ontario) delivered SU's lone goal late in the second period. Out of the 40 goals the Orange has put in this season, Gordon's game-tying tally was only the fourth unassisted marker of the year. Sophomore Stefanie Marty (Nussbaumen, Switzerland) put SU's first unassisted goal away against Quinnipiac on October 18. Senior defenseman Rachel Tilford (Birch Hills, Saskatchewan) rifled a blast from the blue against Sacred Heart on October 31 and sophomore Julie Rising (Millbrae, Calif.) was the last one to score a goal without any help against the

Orange And Panthers Go Head-To-Head on ESPN`s ``Big Monday``

The Orange enter the contest fresh off one of its most impressive performances of the year, a 93-74 thrashing of #12/13 Notre Dame Saturday at the Carrier Dome. Monday night's game will be televised live nationally on ESPN as part of the network's 'Big Monday' coverage. Fans can also listen to the action via the Syracuse ISP Sports Network and its flagship station TK 99 (99.5 FM). The audio stream of the radio broadcast will be available on SUathletics.com as part of Orange All Access.
