The crusader of Castro Street
CLEVE Jones got an email recently from a Mormon father of six who had been to see the movie Milk. The man had voted yes on Proposition 8, a move to ban gay marriage in California. Gus Van Sant's movie had changed his mind. The man told Jones -- a longtime activist and adviser on the movie -- that he was sorry and that he would do whatever he could to make up for supporting the discriminatory legislation. Were he still alive, Harvey Milk would have been at the forefront of fighting it too. He was the first openly gay elected public official in California, winning a seat on the Board of Supervisors in San Francisco (after three failed attempts to gain political office) in 1977. He was the self-declared 'Mayor of Castro Street', the city's gay hub, with More.

Price`s Election Key to Preserving Majority Support for LGBT Equality in CA Legislature
Working to maintain majority support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality in the legislature, the Equality California Political Action Committee has endorsed Democratic candidate Curren Price for the 26th Senate district race. Price, who currently represents the 51st Assembly district, has been a strong ally to the LGBT community since entering the Assembly in 2007 and is the only leading candidate in the race who received a perfect score on the EQCA PAC candidate questionnaire. A special election is being held on March 24 to fill the Senate seat, which became vacant when former Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas was elected to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in November of last year. While serving in the legislature, Ridley-Thomas was a dependable supporter of LGBT equality. More.

Liberia declares state of emergency as caterpillar plague wrecks crops
Liberia has declared a state of emergency over a plague of caterpillars that has destroyed plants and crops and contaminated water supplies, threatening an already fragile food situation.Tens of millions of marching caterpillars have invaded at least 80 towns and villages in central and northern Liberia, preventing some farmers from reaching their fields and causing others to flee their homes. The inch-long pests - the caterpillar life stage of the noctuid moth - have spread to neighbouring Guinea and are threatening Sierra Leone, which has set up monitoring teams along its border.Liberia's president, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, said in a televised speech on Monday night that the country's worst plague of caterpillars in three decades had 'the potential to set back our progress in the production of food and export crops'.She appealed to the international community for financial and logistical help in dealing with the problem, which her government said could cause tens of thousands of people

Environment Agency criticises fine after Thames Water poisoned river
The first officials knew about one of Britain's worst pollution incidents in recent years was when residents began to report the river Wandle had turned 'milky' and dead and distressed fish were everywhere.Local people tried to rescue the chub, roach, dace and barbel, plunging them into buckets of clean water. But they were too late: one man rescued a large number of eels, but they bled to death through their gills.Yesterday Thames Water, the company responsible, was fined £125,000 for the incident in south London in September 2007 - a figure that has been criticised by the Environment Agency as 'not sufficient' to change company behaviour in future. The fish died after a large quantity of industrial chlorine had been accidentally released during a clean-up at a sewage plant owned by Britain's biggest water company. It later turned out that the company realised almost immediately, but staff on site did not did not issue a public warning.Eventually the chlorine spread 3 miles downstream,
